Here's my take.

If this is indeed happening and I guess it is, its still the same old crap. A huge battle for the heart and soul of the party.

The rinos probably think that if we defect and go third party they can keep control and still get us to vote for them in the end.

For me I still want to kick their ass.

I still want to slowly but surely get rid of all these rino bastards and revive the party since I know what happens if we go third party. And there is no guarantee even more "moderates" won't take over a third party. If we keep on kicking their ass they will slowly but surely dwindle and every election cycle we can get rid of more and more of them until they are gone and get the message.

If we go too much third party, rinos join the dem party and give them back the majority???

Could this be a plan? If so, hopefully one that backfires on them.
