AUSTIN Texas land commissioner Jerry Patterson joked that he "would have shot" Democratic nominee for agriculture commissioner Hank Gilbert over some of the tactics used in that campaign.
While introducing Republican Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples at an early voting event Monday in Austin, Patterson told Staples: "I think I would have shot him by now if I were you."

Jerry Patterson was THE hit of the State Republican Party of Texas’s convention back in June. I wasn’t familiar with him at all beforehand, but he had us all cracking up. Witty and funny guy!
When you really mean to shoot someone, you don’t joke about it first....
When he was a state senator, Jerry was the author of the original CHL statute here in Texas. He’s a good man.
Wish he would run for a higher office.
