NY Post Endorses Andrew Cuomo for Governor; Candidates Debate Tonight
NBC New York ^ | 10/18/2010

Posted on 10/18/2010 6:48:41 AM PDT by WebFocus

he New York Post has endorsed Democrat Andrew Cuomo for governor, saying it believes he has the "vision to blaze a path to reform.''

The endorsement comes hours before a seven-way debate in the contentious race to replace Gov. David Paterson in Albany.

The newspaper on Monday said it based its endorsement for Cuomo "in the hope, if not necessarily the full expectation'' that Cuomo would become the strong leader that New York state needs.

But the Post said it isn't clear whether anyone currently running for the state's highest office "is fully up to the task.''

It called Cuomo's Republican opponent, Carl Paladino, a man "with a towering temper and a well-documented contempt for the truth.''

The Post said Cuomo was an effective attorney general who understood "the underlying issues of Albany's ingrained dysfunction and the urgent need to address them.''

Cuomo and Paladino have been busy readying themselves for tonight's televised debate as their surrogates continued to snipe away.

Cuomo's campaign released a new TV ad claiming that Paladino would take away rights and that victims of rape and incest would be denied abortions that are now legal.

Paladino has said he personally opposes abortion as a Catholic. He has said that he would advocate against abortion, but changing abortion laws is not a legislative priority. He said abortion isn't an issue in the campaign but is a way for Democrats to energize their base.

Abortion rights in New York are protected by a supermajority in the Democrat-led Assembly.

You have been all over these threads passionately dissing Paladino when you don't live here. You troll these threads giving various excuses as to why. I'm not buying any of them.

I also notice that you have nothing to say about the info that I posted that Dicker is friends with Cuomo. That renders anything Dicker says as useless.

You are a discouragement/concern troll. Few Freepers have any use for liberal trolls.

I think the very fact that the NYPost endorsed a man who is incredibly corrupt and did so much damage to this country while he was at HUD tells you all you need to know about the Post and those who work there.

I for one have had enough of the discouragement/concern trolls. They pepper these threads with liberal Rino snot.

I agree, they really are terrified that the teaparty will gain ground. They simply don’t realize that win or lose this movement will continue. This is just the FIRST election, there will be more.

You aren’t a NYer and yet you are all over these threads dissing the Tea Party candidate. Why.

Because I think the Tea Party folks need to grow up.

As I've been saying all along, the Tea Party movement is motivated by anger and dissatisfaction. That can be OK, unless the anger and dissatisfaction are unfocused and lack a coherent and organized platform from which to work. Lacking those things, the movement becomes easy prey for people who take advantage of the motivating anger. All it takes is for some guy who hits on the right way to tell Tea Partiers what they want to hear, and they'll be eating out of his hand whether he's a good candidate or a poor one.

Carl Paladino (or, equally, the egregiously awful Dan Maes in Colorado) show that the Tea Party movement is not in control of its own destiny. The Tea Party is purposely unorganized. It has no coherent platform, no means of vetting candidates, and its members are politically naive.

The anger and dissatisfaction about the direction of the country are valid and appropriate. But unless the Tea Party movement decides to define and channel those things for itself, people like you are going to end up bitter and disillusioned by your inability to find viable candidates.

The issue isn't "a few curt statements" - the issue is that the statements he's made have specifically been to accuse several specific people of committing felonies.

Such sensational claims will automatically focus the attention of the public away from policy and onto the alleged crimes.

Of course Paladino's policies are far superior to Cuomo's.

However, Paladino has made sure that his wild, unsubstantiated accusations of criminal activity against his enemies would suck all the oxygen from the room and leave policy in the dust.

Paladino has made this election a referendum on his trustworthiness and character, instead of a referendum on the Obama economy or on the Cuomo family's record.

Because he has failed to produce evidence to substantiate his accusations, any referendum on his trustworthiness and character is going to be a landslide against him.

Which is sad, because a referendum on the Obama economy or the Cuomo record would have been a winner for the GOP.

would have been a winner for the GOP.

Did you miss that FR is NOT a republican site? We want winners for CONSERVATIVES. You're a Rino pusher, ain't ya.

And why should it ? It would change the focus ONLY IF YOU LET IT.

Elections are always heated and people say things they should not have said ALL THE TIME.

I cannot speak for the “public” that you mention, but we are registered members of FREE REPUBLIC and we ought to know better.

POLICIES, that’s what’s important.

Accusations he makes against the folks in Albany on the other hand have plenty of time to be investigated and I would not be surprised if they were SUBSTANTIATED later.

How long did it take for instance for the corruption of the “respected” insiders — Alan Hevesi, Pedro Espada, Charles Rangel and the rest of their ilk to be exposed?

YEARS !! But those corruption are OPEN SECRETS to those who pay attention.

So, your observations are relevant only to those who prefer to look at the shallow side of the issues. We in FR ought to know better, YOU INCLUDED.

You have been all over these threads passionately dissing Paladino when you don't live here.

I was born and raised in New York and do business here. I'm sure I pay more taxes in New York than most of the FReepers sniping at me.

I also notice that you have nothing to say about the info that I posted that Dicker is friends with Cuomo.

I'm sure he is close friends with Cuomo.

That doesn't mean that he did the things Paladino accused him of doing.

If you're going to accuse someone of harassing a little child, you had better back that up with some evidence.

You are a discouragement/concern troll. Few Freepers have any use for liberal trolls.

You realizing that no matter how much you insult me, it won't turn Paladino into a competent or successful candidate, right? I'm not going to participate in the Paladino Potemkin village you've got going on here.

And how's that working out for you?

“A New York Times poll found that Mr. Cuomo had opened a big lead over Carl P. Paladino, drawing 59 percent of likely voters, to his Republican rival’s 24 percent.”

I heard that excuse before. I was born and raised in Ohio. Still have family there. I have no idea who's running let alone troll Ohio threads. Hubby works in Jersey. He doesn't concern himself with Jersey politics. HE DOESN'T LIVE THERE.

Freepers are fed up with concern/discouragement trolls.

It would change the focus ONLY IF YOU LET IT.

No, it will change the focus, period.

Only someone completely unaware of human nature would imagine that: "My policy on state pension benefits differs substantially from my opponent's on the following four points . . . " is going to grab more attention from the public than: "That guy likes to stalk little girls and photograph them!"

Paladino made sensational, attention-grabbing claims about his opponents - and then he didn't back them up.

One thousand high-quality position papers are not going to undo the fundamental lack of trust that creates.

Hubby works in Jersey. He doesn't concern himself with Jersey politics.

Too bad, because people who live in NJ but who do not pay a cent of taxes do concern themselves with Jersey politics - and are happy to take advantage of your husband's willful ignorance of Jersey politics to take money out of your family's pockets.

I don't like paying exorbitant taxes in NY, which is why I'm pretty upset with Paladino for screwing up the best chance we've had in a while to roll them back. His stupidity is going to wind up costing me money - and plenty of New Yorkers their jobs and livelihoods.

I would think that if someone falsely accused me of stalking a child, I would definitely be angry enough to endorse his opponent whether his opponent was a worthless candidate or not.
