he New York Post has endorsed Democrat Andrew Cuomo for governor, saying it believes he has the "vision to blaze a path to reform.''
The endorsement comes hours before a seven-way debate in the contentious race to replace Gov. David Paterson in Albany.
The newspaper on Monday said it based its endorsement for Cuomo "in the hope, if not necessarily the full expectation'' that Cuomo would become the strong leader that New York state needs.
But the Post said it isn't clear whether anyone currently running for the state's highest office "is fully up to the task.''
It called Cuomo's Republican opponent, Carl Paladino, a man "with a towering temper and a well-documented contempt for the truth.''
The Post said Cuomo was an effective attorney general who understood "the underlying issues of Albany's ingrained dysfunction and the urgent need to address them.''
Cuomo and Paladino have been busy readying themselves for tonight's televised debate as their surrogates continued to snipe away.
Cuomo's campaign released a new TV ad claiming that Paladino would take away rights and that victims of rape and incest would be denied abortions that are now legal.
Paladino has said he personally opposes abortion as a Catholic. He has said that he would advocate against abortion, but changing abortion laws is not a legislative priority. He said abortion isn't an issue in the campaign but is a way for Democrats to energize their base.
Abortion rights in New York are protected by a supermajority in the Democrat-led Assembly.

If I were a "paid Cuomo shill" I would be congratulating Paladino on a brilliant campaign strategy and encouraging him and his campaign to just keep on doing what they're doing.
In other words, I'd be imitating you.
If you are not on the Cuomo team, then why are you trying to demoralize the troops with you oh we just cant win we have such a terrible candidate BS
I wouldn't need to "demoralize the troops" - even Paladino's most die-hard fans can see the poll numbers in freefall.
What I am pointing out is that Paladino has wasted an historic opportunity by making specific stupid moves and that these moves should be documented so that they are not repeated.
Either that or too stupid to know when to keep your trap shut
If no one points out that the Paladino campaign is responsible for losing this election, revisionists like yourself will claim in the future that he was a good candidate and that other random factors made the difference in the race.
My goal is not to encourage wrongheaded wishful thinking, but hardheaded analysis: how can we avoid this kind of disaster in the future?
I actually care about what happens next time. I actually think it was a bad idea to throw this election away.
What should I tell Sarah Palin? That she made a great decision in not hiring Michael Caputo? Trust me, she's already well aware of her wisdom in that regard.
shut up you dumb ass
only idiot cuomo shills cannot recognize media sliming a candidate- and blame the candidate
you are too stupid to be a freeper
go away
Right now the numbers say that 57% of the public does not trust the press.
That means the press can try to get Cuomo elected, but they can only succeed with Paladino's help.
Luckily for them, he's done everything he can for the press' cause.
The press is trying to elect Cuomo as they did Obama and you're helping.
Keep shilling for Cuomo. You do it so well.
Your insights are as wise as they are eloquent.
Carl Paladino is the one pushing for Cuomo. I really wish he wasn't.
I've had several Freepers tell me that you're a liberal troll and always have been. I believe it.
Just to make sure, you also believe that Paladino is doing a great job so far, right?
You dance.
?
The press is trying to elect Cuomo as they did Obama and you're helping.
I'm helping the press by warning Paladino supporters that the stupid things he's doing are playing into the press' hands?
Explain that one.
I've never encountered a group of people who were so enthusiastic about losing a previously winnable election.
What the press is saying is as truthful as Trig is really Bristol's. You just don't get it. Or else you're just playing dumb in order to push Cuomo. It really doesn't matter as the result is the same.
And your statement describes PERFECTLY a concern troll.
damn right...
1. DENIAL This stage began right after Paladino stepped in it -- the loud claims that this was a real issue, that Carl was right to bring it up rather than "hide" it, and that the voters would love him for it.
2. ANGER This is where things are right now. Paladino's difficulties cannot be avoided. But it's obviously somebody else's fault -- the media, the voters, whoever....
Next comes Bargaining, Depression, and finally Acceptance.
The "bargaining" part is probably a stretch -- it's difficult to see what or whom these folks would bargain with, in the face of their difficulties. So I'll skip that.
Depression is almost certain.
"Acceptance" can result either in surrender, or in a determination to get it right next time.
I'm hoping for determination to get it right; but I could just as easily see "surrender," in the form of pulling out of the political realm althogether.
Yes, as usual...good troll bait thread!
That's a fascinating analogy.
Let's unpack it.
Andrew Sullivan said that Trig Palin was Bristol Palin's child. This was a serious, damaging claim that demanded evidence. When Sullivan was asked to back up this claim, he offered absolutely no proof whatever.
Carl Paladino said that Fred Dicker - or someone he hired - had stalked and photographed a small child. This was a serious, damaging claim that demanded evidence. When Paladino was asked to back up this claim, he offered absolutely no proof whatever.
How much credibility does Andrew Sullivan have these days?
Question of the Day: How do you spot a Concern Troll or Eeyore?(HillBuzz)
Concern Trolls DELIBERATELY lower morale.
Eeyores lower morale unintentionally.
Paladino has tried to talk about the issues, but they just won’t let him. They are doing a total hit job on him.
If I were him I would ignore the questions and get right into all of the troubles NY and the US are facing- I would also belittle the news people and say “with NY State going bankrupt, you want to talk about some comments I made weeks ago ?”
Yes, they are. And that's exactly what some of us predicted would happen, the day after Paladino opened his now-famous can of worns.
Any responsible campaign advisor would have predicted that result before the Paladino put together prepared remarks that were actually more inflammatory than what Paladino actually said -- and he might well have been able to avoid this mess.
But he didn't.
And then, he went out and threw gas on the fire for a couple of days.
And then he backtracked.
Nothing like a candidate throwing out barrels of chum to draw the media sharks to his campaign.
Paladino will never have the initiative again.
When I had lunch with Dicker in Miami last year, I was surprised when he punched Andrew up on his speed dial of his cell phone and handed the phone over so Andrew could say hello.
At the time, a number of FReepers thought Paladino's screaming match with Dicker at the press conference was great - that it would help him in the polls.
Then, when the polls came back, the sentiment shifted to the opinion that the confrontation was somehow a "set up" by a devilishly clever journalist.
Right now the prevailing consensus seems to be that Paladino is doing a great job and that the polls are the result of mind control exerted by the MSM - which we are told, on other threads, is completely discredited and losing its influence.
Hopefully reality will finally be recognizable after the election: that you can have momentum and you can have ideas but you also need competent candidates.
Only Democrats can get away with having basketcases as officeholders.
And 3rd worlders don't vote for real Americans anymore, they vote and agitate for tyranny..they want to be ruled, and taken care of by government, while they wallow in poverty.
Nasty and divisive is their mindset, not mine..so knock it off.
