The greatest myth about light rail, intercity rail, monorails and maglev is that fancy new transportation systems will create demand. Transportation systems follow and cannot create demand. The fact that the roads are empty during rush hour demonstrates better than any government study that there is no demand. It doesn't matter if you put in Jetsons flying cars. If they don't go where people want to go it is just a phenomenal waste of money.

Too bad Willie Green is no longer among the Freepers as I would love to see him explain how this money sucking patronage pit is a good idea.

Btw, good point about light rail et al almost always being scams to transfer money from producers to government drones.

Been lurking here for something around two years, and found his obsession to be stragely fascinating. What a bizarre man. Far from being merely enamored of trains, and thinking they were economically desirable, he seemed to believe that they could cure cancer, do the dishes, and return us to Eden.

We do not need this. But let me tell you that the roads are NOT empty during rush hour. I drive it every day.

I think many Freepers are excessively negative about Rail.

Too bad Willie Green is no longer among the Freepers as I would love to see him explain how this money sucking patronage pit is a good idea.

Wille on the other hand went too far the other way.

It would be interesting to see if the cost and ridership projections were based in reality, often they do not seem to be.

From his last post on FR to Jim Robinson:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2607597/posts?page=60#60

>>Over 35 million Americans rely on some form of public tansportation to commute to work every weekday.
If that makes them “marxist” in your worldview, then I suggest that you refrain from hanging out with the whacknut libertarians. They obviously have been a bad influence on you.<<

Which got this reply from Jim:

...
It’s not wanted here. Drop it or leave. The choice is yours and I’m not going to argue with you about it. Zip it or zot it.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2607597/posts?page=65#65

and ShadowAce gave this reply:

10M in NYC, another 5-10M in LA, several million more in Chicago.

Doesn’t leave much for the rest of the country, and the argument fails.

I would have included the millions in the Baltamore / DC area in that and let Willie explain why we need pubic transportation.

I think willie was chewing up too much bandwidth. Trains were great when they built the transcontinental rail road and our train system helped us win WWII but they are a much smaller part now. I do not see empty roads just empty buss and trains on public transportation. Give me my old truck and cheap gas an you can build what ever you can afford. Do not expect to spend my retirement on your blue sky dreams.

What happened to Willie Green? He was a miserable and bitter old man who didn’t think twice about attacking freepers in a personal and vicious manner. Did it catch up to him?

Light rail projects might be good in a few select places. I don’t mind the Federales funding them as demonstration projects. But just about all the ones I’ve recently seen are obscene wastes of taxpayers money. Rip-offs similar to ethanol.

Willie Green would thoughtlessly promote any and every light rail scheme
