Could people identify flamers back then? They weren’t part of the popular culture then so would people associate the fay characteristics of people like Liberace and Paul Lynde as homosexual?

I guess by the surprising number of supporters they seem to have, Liberace and Paul Lynde were accepted even though they were so over the top flamingly uber-gay one needed an fire extinguisher at hand to view them.

Nobody in the general population knew big name movie stars like Rock Hudson or Montgomery Clift were homosexuals because the media kept a lid on that stuff. That’s because none of their movies or or public actions looked odd. Liberace, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Lynde were different because they talked in the stereotypical male homosexual manner. Still, no one really cared.

I remember my parents and grandparents knowing he was a homo. I know we had a neighbor when I was about 3 years old that my Mom told me not to talk to. She later told me that she thought he was “funny”.
And Paul Lynde, who was hysterical on Hollywood Squares, was so obviously queer. I remember one question he got which was “Why do bikers wear leather?” His answer in his typical Paul Lynde voice was “Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.” Loved him.

Hey, I’ll readily admit I’m a big fan of the late Paul Lynde... that guy was FUNNY. Ditto Stephen Stucker.

I don’t know Stephen Stucker.
Lynde was good as the voice of the rat in Charlotte’s Web.
