So we should impoverish ourselves now so as to not have anything worth stealing, then die of thirst/hunger/exposure because we do not have those things?

My philosophy has always been that it's better to look poor and be rich than look rich and be poor. Even so, all the preparation or wealth in the world won't save you at the end of the world, so you'd better be ready for the next one.
That line “God helps those who help themselves” is not anywhere in the Bible.
What is in the bible is the line (paraphrased), The fool looks around at what’s going on and continues on his way, the wise man looks around and plans accordingly.
This does not mean the fool never gets through hard times or the prepared ones always survive, it is talking about a mindset. It isn’t a guarantee. You can’t bank on it that you being prepared automatically gets you through a tough time.
