You'd think so, it's just one straight shot through town but every time it would be bumper to bumper insanity. The first few times I couldn't imagine how there were even enough cars in a town that size to cause all that backup.
Last year I had my wife and our five kids in the van and my 73 year old parents in a car behind us and after getting trapped on the wrong side of a multi car pile up I swore I'd rename the kids Grant, Sherman, McClellan, Lincoln and Babs (don't ask) and burn the whole place to the ground while singing Yankee Doodle. Then the gps told me to take 95 around Florence and I've been much happier since.
It’s a little worse than it used to be but Florence is the easiest town to drive in that I have ever seen, even for a small one. Back in the sixties I was living in Cheraw which back then would make today’s Florence look like Chicago by comparison and I used to see some awful jams. US 1, hwy 52, hwy 9 and some other little roads were all routed through the middle of town. Once on a Friday before a holiday weekend I left my job at Bennettsville and when I got to where my street turned off of 52 I couldn’t turn left, I had to drive a mile further and turn off to my left and come back down so that I could make a right turn to go home. All this in a town of 5000 or so! The traffic was bumper to bumper all the way through.
