In 1997, one of Bill Clinton's Cabinet members suggested that Shelton order a US plane to fly low over Baghdad so Saddam would shoot it down and, ta da, give America instant justification for war. "I was so mad I was about to explode," recounts Shelton, thinking about the sacrificial pilot.
Why, of course we can, he responded. "Just as soon as we get your ass qualified to fly it, I will have it flown just as low and slow as you want to go. The memoir doesn't name the Cabinet member, but Elliott notes that the way the passage is written leaves Madeleine Albright as a distinct possibility.

If it’s the truth, why doesn’t he name the person?

I had some inside info on Albright during the Kosovo war. This sounds very similar to her attitude then.

The basic rule that governs the thinking of all Socialists/Marxists - The ends always justify the means.
This so-called piece of human excrement that made this suggestion should be prosecuted for attempted murder.

"but if this fell during one of the particularly more egregious Clinton scandals, Blumenthal would be accepatable as a long-shot."
I could see Blumenthal saying something like this, but he wasn't a cabinet member, so that narrows the playing field.

Just imagine the other contrived maneuvers that were suggested. I would have liked to be a fly in that room.

I just can't wrap my hands around the concept that we live in a country where the "wag the dog" administrations believe that wars need to be provoked by an orchestrated deception against another country. We had more than enough valid reasons to go to Iraq. We need to quit putting on a show.

But we don’t have an aircraft with that wide of a cockpit to fit it. If we did, Saddam would have accused us of using ugly bombs against them.

Thanks george76. What's the name of the memoir?

could we please get Shrillary to fly a plane low and slow over Tehran?
when they shoot it down we’d have the excuse to obliterate their nuclear program and regime
ooops, Obozo would just thank them and apologize again for American sins

That would have been one hell of a pre-mission briefing for the lucky pilot. “By order of the President, you are to get shot down as a pretext to justify further intervention by the US Government”.
I am utterly convinced that today's brass wouldn't hesitate to run to go carry out such a disgusting treasonous order—especially in light of all the problems with the Air Force leadership and the Army Chief of Staff's remarks about favoring diversity over security (to please his political masters).
Would you accept such orders or would you go ballistic? At what point to you question authority? Especially when you know your leaders are traitors and are complicit in treason against the people and Constitution!
