"My son's iPhone took a dirt-nap and couldn't be revived - " How so? Wouldn't Apple repair/replace it?

Wouldn't Apple repair/replace it? The dead iPhone was almost two years old. Well past Apple's 1-yr limited warranty. In hindsight, he should have purchased a two year warranty (an additional $99 I believe).
