Never heard of them ... and I grew up surfing in Santa Cruz.
They played East Coast beach music. Some of the best beach music in the country comes from Myrtle Beach. Good old shagging music. RIP Gen.

Neither have I, but I’m going to remember him by taking my 7’6” pumpkin seed out tomorrow AM.
Beach music is part of the culture in the Southeastern US. Generally black bands playing for white kids. It started in the 50’s and 60’s and has continued to this day. I attended the first ever Emerald Isle Beach Music festival as a college sophmore in 1979 with a Bud in one hand and girl in another.
Hey!
I grew up surfing in Santa Cruz too
and I never heard of him also!!!
Different culture and different music entirely. This is east coast, really more southeastern, centered on the Carolina coast, with Myrtle Beach as the mecca. Very distinct sound with very distinct dance moves. The “Shag,” (yes we know what it means in England) is basically a modified form of the Jitterbug.
If you encounter the movie “Shag,” rent it. A little on the sappy side, sort of a chick flick, but people do love it, a great slice of life about the era and the music. A very young, very beautiful Phoebe Cates was something else, along with Bridget Fonda and a few other early-career notables. The original soundtrack is great, despite a few out-of-place covers, and decent covers at that, but it’s not quite the same.

Santa Cruz...wrong coast.
But you guys had the Beach Boys...and they weren’t that bad...
Beach music was a form of southern soul music that was very popular in summer rental communities from the Jersey Shore to Georgia in the early 60s.
