This is an outrage. But the cavalier, "man, like, chill out" treatment of it is in the same manner we turn a blind eye and even joke about US Federal Immigration Violations. This is another crack in the wall about the United States being a nation of LAW and ORDER. If we want to sink into Third Worldism, folks, you are looking right at at.

In most advanced, civilized countries this behavior at a polling place would have SERIOUS legal implications, and would probably end with the result of arrest or at least heavy fining of the candidate's wife. I can think of this all over Asia, and in Latin America being handled seriously in this manner, very quickly (once in the Press like this).

I know here in Japan, where we gave them and helped develop for them their postwar Democracy, the actions of the First Lady a) would violate 公職選挙法における連座制は、同法251条の2から251条の4 (Public Election Law, relatinting to "Renzasei", Article 251 Section 2 to 4).

b) would not be papered over by the Japanese media or laughed off by the Prime Minister's office or spokesman.
