Who are the Charedim? Are they a group in Hasidic Judaism?

Charedim (the word is the masculine plural noun for someone who trembles, thus meaning those who tremble in the Presence of G-d--the same verse the Quakers get their name from) are simply the "Ultra-Orthodox" Jews as opposed to the Modern Orthodox. I think it also is applied more to those who are not Chassidic.

Oh I see. I didn't know that Orthodoxy could be subdivided into Modern Orthodox and “Ultra Orthodox.”

I thought I was hot stuff because I knew the 3 main branches of Judaism! :-)

I see you spell “Chassidic” with the Ch rather than the H. I always spelled it “Hassidic,” but spelled Chanukah with the Ch.

When you're a native NYer, you learn something about everyone. :-)
