EL PASO, Texas -- UTEP Students Launch "Mexodus" Project
A team of student reporters from The University of Texas at El Paso will work with an experienced bilingual journalist to develop and publish a multimedia package of stories that examines the exodus of businesses and members of the middle class from Mexico due to increasing levels of crime and drug violence. The stories will appear on Borderzine.com.
The project, called "Mexodus" and funded by a $25,000 grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, will examine the economic, academic and cultural impact of the growing migration from Mexico to El Paso and other areas. According to one estimate, more than 400,000 Mexican citizens have fled the country in the last three years. Mexico recently reported more than 28,000 drug war-related deaths since 2006.
"We are proud to support projects like this one at UTEP that reinforce best practices in investigative journalism and multimedia in a university classroom setting and set a high standard for similar student projects elsewhere," said Bob Ross, foundation president and CEO.
Frank G. Pérez, Ph.D., chair of UTEP's Department of Communication, said the project enhances the general public's understanding of a significant border topic. "We are thrilled the foundation is giving students an opportunity to produce quality journalism working with professional mentors," he said.

The best thing we could do for Mexico would be to return their middle class. As it is, right now, all we are doing is returning to them their criminals. So the population density of criminals in Mexico increases yearly.
They best be careful on what they are reporting.
The cartels like jounalists about as much as they like cops.
Finish Mexico off. Send in the UN.
now, now. let’s not lose our heads, young journalists...
Use some brains here. Mexico is being ripped up and English speaking Americans have no clue what is going on down there. Look back through history and you will see an exodus in any country that has the problems Mexico has. Go to Google maps and you will see that Mexico has army bases in every town in the northern 1/5th. The army can’t win and the civilians are desperate.
Yeah, the middle class are moving here by the thousands and I’m talking about 125,000 ready located here. And the maddening thing about all this crap is they bring their mexican traditions along with them plus they pack our schools to the brim which our taxes will go further up. They ain’t going back to Mexico they intend to stay here. OH you ask how can they so easily move over...All they have to do is have a VISA, cash for a house or down payment with a bank MORE than willing to finance them....THAT’S IT! Pretty nice huh?!! OBTW, if the Mex. mafia is after them guess where they are most likely to find them...yep, your friendly next door neighbors!! WHERE WILL ALL OF THIS STOP??!! Do you think for one moment these folks would want to go back voluntarily when the violence stops...why? they have it good here...HELL NO!! They are taking advantage of the opportunity and the system before the doors close and they are coming by the thousands!!
Human stupidity is bottomless.
Send in the UN, *then* finish Mexico off.
Two birds with one nuke.
Er, stone.
How about supporting "projects like this one at UTEP that reinforce best practices in investigative journalism" and write about the impact of illegals on America or even just the border towns?
What I meant was; send in the UN *to* finish Mexico off.
I think that *project* has been under way for decades.
