Dan Walters: Whitman may have won debate, but effect on contest with Brown uncertain
Sacramento Bee ^ | 10/13/10 | Dan Walters

Gubernatorial rivals Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman slugged it out toe to toe Tuesday, a far cry from their last debate when Brown hammered Whitman mercilessly on her hiring and firing an illegal immigrant housekeeper.

Whitman was clearly the more aggressive during their third and last debate at Dominican University in Marin County, taking advantage of the Brown campaign's embarrassment about an accidentally recorded phone message in which someone close to Brown, in his presence, called Whitman a "whore" in obtaining a police union endorsement.

Brown apologized again, but then may have stumbled by declaring that calling someone a whore is not as bad as using the N-word to describe an African American, running the risk of alienating women, who are half of the state's voters.

Sensing an opening, Whitman declared that California "deserves better than slurs and personal attacks" and that calling someone a whore is "a deeply offensive term to women."

It was, in a sense, turnabout for the verbal lashing that Brown laid on Whitman 10 days earlier in Fresno about her illegal immigrant housekeeper.

“It was, in a sense, turnabout for the verbal lashing that Brown laid on Whitman 10 days earlier in Fresno about her illegal immigrant housekeeper.”

Verbal lashing? LOL!

IMHO, Meg whupped on him up one side and down the other both times.

In mudslinging terms, the whole whore haggle will have a far greater impact than the illegal housekeeper caper.

Common sense says that Meg Whitman is the most qualified candidate in this race. I fear, though, that California's time as a once-great-state is quickly coming to an end, by the looks of the comments posted by Californians on various local sites.

How sad for CA...the one person who may have the cajones to do what's necessary to save their sorry state, is behind in the polls.

Will somebody p-l-e-a-s-e wake California up???

Oh puhleaze. If people see then they saw Whitman won, and what else is there to discuss?

Brown is a mumbling idiot with no new answers. Whitman if nothing else is vibrant, new and presents challenging new ideas to an exhausted Kalifornia electorate...and she beat the pants off him.

How much more does the author thinks they need to see to know which choice to make?

What a shill.

She may have won the debate, but this is still California. In virtually any other state in the union, “Moonbeam” Brown would be a kook fringe candidate, with a double-digit deficit in all polls. He leads in California. ‘Nuff said.

California will start the slow road to recovery when the public employee unions finally go belly up.

And they will, but NOTHING good can happen until they do. It doesn't matter who's in charge. The greedy unions are just too powerful.

Whoever is commenting on those sites must be union, party hacks and dope smokers trying to mold public opinion.

The central theme seems to be some kind of class envy.

If these people are a true representation of California voters then stick a fork in us we’re done.

Honest questions to Conservatives:

Shouldn't Conservatives want to see Brown as Governor?

Why? Because Kalifornia is going down and wouldn't it be better if Captain Brown is at the helm when the Titanic-Kalifornia hits the iceberg?!?!?!

Ironically, if Brown does win it'll be a direct result of his authorizing collective bargaining way back when.

Its tough to cut through all the union static with a different message in this state. They spend tens of millions every election cycle.

He doesn’t seem to be putting much effort into this thing at all, does he?

To me, he looked like he was shifting back and forth between panic and anger.

He’s probably mad that he actually might have to work for this position.

If he had a game way back when, he was certainly off it.

Meg was scoring points and he looked like his defense was sagging at best. And when he did try to score, he looked petty...or um, Liberal, but I repeat myself.

My son was watching the veins on both sides of Brown’s forehead as he got angrier and angrier. Brown looked like he was going to spontaneously combust.

yep.. we are done. I see another 1 to 2 per cent sales tax increase, in the next 2 years.

If California votes in this fool, then all hell will break loose here, in the next couple of years. We will see all kinds of sin taxes on soda and candy... complete smoking ban, even in private residences, etc.

Everyone I talk to here, doesn’t even know that the State House and State Senate have been run by the dems for the past 40 years.

It’s going to have to get a whole lot worse, before this state finally turns around.

I can remember Jonhny Carson telling jokes about Jerry(Moonbeam) Brown. Brown was a joke then and Brown is a joke now.

Kalifornia is at rock bottom and has resumed digging.

So we have proof Whitman can be coached. May be too little to late.

I think a good rhetorical question to ask, “Is Jerry Brown actually Lex Luthor?”

Both bald. Both megalomaniacs. Both want to destroy California. Both are surrounded by buffoons and bimbos. Both dated Linda Ronstadt.
