After five years as chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party, C. Richard "Dickie" Cranwell will step down in December.
"The decision to retire as chair of what I believe to be the most effective state party in the country was not an easy one," Cranwell said Tuesday in a statement released by the party.
He attributed his decision to a desire "to spend more time with my family."
A resident of Vinton, Cranwell spent 30 years in the House of Delegates representing a Roanoke County district. He retired from the legislature in 2002.
Cranwell led the party during the election of a Democratic governor (Timothy M. Kaine), two Democratic senators (Jim Webb and Mark Warner) and worked to deliver Virginia for President Barack Obama in 2008. Those successes gave way to a disappointing 2009 election cycle for Democrats, when three Republicans swept into statewide office.
Cranwell said he'll maintain some level of involvement in politics.
"I'm just going to be a foot soldier now, not a staff sergeant," he said.
Let the disappointment continue through 2010 and on in to 2012.
Given what happened in VAs last elections can this guy be promoted to their natl chair?
Alas, poor Dickie. Delusional to the bitter end.
Just an observation from a long-time Virginian...’Dickie’ is a bitter, partisan hack. bye, bye.
Cranwell is a weasel. Goodbye and good riddance!
Always wondered about guys who use their first initial and middle name and even more when they feminize the middle name.
Any word on his replacement? Does anyone want that job?
Well, we DO have 2 Dem Sens now, had 2 Dem govs in a row, and for the first time in 40 years, VA’s electoral votes went into the Dem column. So when everyone thought the Dems’ days in VA were over, they fought their way back. Hopefully that spell is over.
Yes, but I would argue that circumstances and Republican miss steps contributed more to that than Dickie Cranwell.
>Always wondered about guys who use their first initial and middle name and even more when they feminize the middle name.<
Lots of men who are juniors or 2nd, 3rd, etc. use their first initial and are called by their middle names to differentiate themselves from their fathers or grandfathers. It’s fairly common in businesses and in the south.
Keep Dickie in Richmond...we don’t want his hide back here in SW VA....
no argument there, Corin, but we’re still stuck with TWO Dem Senators!!!! At least till ‘12.
