Plan B [by US company] Turns Out to Be Fastest Path for Rescue
New York Times ^ | 13 Oct 2010 | Henry Fountain

One reason Chilean officials may have thought the drilling could take far longer was that they were not familiar with the type of drill that carved the rescue hole. ...

“To tell you the truth, I don’t think anyone had a whole lot of faith in us,” said Brandon Fisher, president of Center Rock, a company in Berlin, Pa., that supplied the Plan B drills. “They didn’t understand the technology.”

Mr. Fisher and others lobbied the Chilean government to let them use the drills, known as downhole hammers, which have air-powered bits that pound the rock as the drill rotates. The other two drilling operations used more conventional bits that work through rotation only.

It was American technology that succeeded. There is almost no coverage of this so far, but the old NYT (of all places) comes through on this one.

Boreholes are difficult to drill straight with precision, but this method was the one that worked.

It would be nice (but don't hold your breathe) of the Chileans publicly acknowledged this indispensable American help — which we are happy to have been able to offer. A simple "Thanks!" would be enough!

I was surprised as well that there was virtually no media coverage of America's contribution. Then I remembered that according to our dictator-in-chief, America is not supposed to be exceptional anymore.

America is not supposed to be exceptional anymore.

Even when we have one hand tied behind our backs by obama, we can still be exceptional.

obama is going to have to stop that somehow. Maybe this company should be required to sell its equipment to anyone but American companies. More of that "spreading the wealth around."

....yesterday Iman Obama lifted the moratorium on drilling, but HIS administration won’t issue permits to drill...(one of those small print items the MSM don’t print)

Anyone who has drilled into rock would know that a hammer drill always does better than a non-hammer drill.

America is bankrupt. Our economy is in shambles. We cannot pay our bills. We can’t even pay the interest on our loans! We are more divided now than we were during the Civil War. Our president is a Marxist racist who has declared war on American taxpayers.....etc.....etc....etc...

But when disaster strikes anywhere in the world we gladly pick up the 911 call and respond immediately in full force. “Hello, this is America, how can we help”.

America has given more to the world than ANY country since the beginning of time.

I love the U.S.A.!

Thank goodness this enterprise was not under the regulatory regime of Obama and his his commissars...the Chilean miners would still be waiting for the environmental impact study to begin.

This rescue is not happening at a good political time for Obama. The reinforcement of the fact that when the chips are down “can do” Americas come through again could translate into a political disaster for Obama who wants all of us to “understand” that only government can solve problems.

I understand the driller was flown from Afghanistan where he was drilling water wells? How many Americans know we have been drilling water wells in Iraq and Afghanistan since right after the two wars got underway??

We still have mining colleges in Universities that graduate some of the smartest folks in the world - mining engineers and sundry support specialists.

We need to get rid of the EPA and other federal fascist bureaucracies to unleash these people and their hard rock knowledge. Mining everywhere for everything can be the beginning of getting America back on its feet.

I saw credit being given to US, NASA. Then it was diluted by “the whole world helped”.

It’s amazing what American technology and business can achieve when the government isn’t “helping” them.

Be prepared for Obama to give a speech full of “I did”, “Because I” etc. and take all the credit. What a worthless CIC.
