Mexican authorities have found the bodies of seven young men killed in three separate attacks across Tijuana -- a spate of violence that runs counter to what officials have described as an improving security situation.
The bodies, two of them decapitated and strung from a highway overpass, were discovered within an eight-hour period between Sunday evening and early Monday morning, according to the Baja California state prosecutors office.
Law-enforcement officials in Tijuana and Baja California and Mexicos federal military have made some visible progress working together against drug-related violence afflicting several regions of the country. Brazen shootouts and gruesome killings in public settings have declined, but the 2010 homicide rate for Baja California is on pace to exceed last years.
On Sunday evening, judicial investigators found the bullet-riddled bodies of four men, ages 22 to 26, in the interior patio of a home in a working-class neighborhood of Tijuana. Spent bullet casings suggest the attacker or attackers used an assault rifle.
Shortly before midnight, a man was found shot to death outside an uninhabited, one-room dwelling on the eastern side of the city.
Authorities said the motives for those two killings were unclear, although assault rifles are common among drug traffickers.
Before dawn on Monday, authorities found two decapitated bodies dangling from a bridge over a highway on the south side of Tijuana that leads to Rosarito.
A message scrawled on a piece of cardboard was left behind, though prosecutors declined give more details.
These grisly, publicity-grabbing tactics often are used by organized criminals seeking to intimidate rival gangs in Mexico.
As an American, you would have to be out of your MIND to go down there nowadays, if not absolutely, positively necessary and if so with a small prive army of personal protection services.
Agreed. I think it is tragic that we have let fervent anti-Americanism and pro-socialism/communism fester in Mexico, and are now watching that country slip into drug cartel associated anarchy.
I'm not talking about sending money there etc.. We should have been protecting our border much better, and therefore preventing the corrupt Mexican government from using the US as its safety valve. They have most definitely used the US in this manner, while all the while promoting anti-US sentiment as a way of uniting its own populace behind a surrogate scapegoat for all the problems Mexico faces.
We should be exporting to Mexico an appreciation of all that capitalism can provide, and extolling the virtues of America as the land of opportunity. Instead we have ‘imported’, commonly illegally, the dispossessed from their society who their own government has failed, all the while allowing anti-American hatred, such as that spewed by LaRaza, to thrive within our own borders.
