I think you may have made a mistake in your calculations. I took the SS annual statement on taxed earnings, used the historical rates for SS tax rate for my history (1965: 3.63% to 2007, 6.2%), used a 10% rate of return (average stock market return over the years) on both my contributions and my employer's contributions (I assumed =), and only came up with a fund (to 2007) of about $1,000,000 (calc (1 + interest rate) * (this years contributions + accumulated previous contributions (employers and employees)). Since 1977, I've been hitting/exceeding the SS limit on taxed income. Your record since 1977 couldn't have been more.

At 0.04% rate the fund amounts to only $368,000. None of this is inflation adjusted, and were it to be, I'm sure it would be much more valuable in terms of purchasing power.
