The Russian Defense Ministry will receive its first Su-35 fighter plane by the end of the year, Russia's Sukhoi Aircraft Design Bureau said on Monday.

The first modernized Su-35 was presented at the 2007 MAKS air show outside Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry signed a deal with Sukhoi on the purchase of 48 modernized Su-35 jets in 2009.

Sukhoi is also holding talks with customers in South-East Asia, the Middle East and South America on Su-35 sales.

The Su-35 Flanker-E, a modification of the Su-27, is a heavy class, long-range, multi-role fighter, whose technical characteristics can be compared with those of fifth-generation jets.

I think that there a too many drunk Russians for them to produce high quality jets. Their engineering is pretty good, but their manufacturing talents are not well-regarded.

Clearly it is quite stealthy...especially if you turn off the radar...

It's not about the airframe. It's about the man at the controls. A pilot needs the characteristics of initiative, aggressiveness, creativity and most importantly, time in the air in actual air combat or realistic training for it.

LOL! Versus the drunken union scum on the lines at companies like United Technologies? US defense companies are loaded with union scum on the line who love Obama.

I knew someone who got a job with a UTX division. They kept their mouth shut about politics. The union scum on the line were hard core Dems. After a month they figured out this person was not on the team and got them fired. The Russians are less of a threat to American than the union scum on the line at US Defense companies.

I always find it interesting that these wonderful Soviet/Russian flying machines come on line a couple years or so after the introduction of the American machines. Also, that they look so much like the American aircraft they’re mimicking.

It doesn’t take an engineer to see the difference in manufacturing quality when Soviet/Russian military equipment is displayed side-by-side with American stuff. I suspect, as we discovered after the collapse of the USSR, the performance of Russian equipment is also inferior to American counterparts.

I wonder, too, if Russian pilots are allowed more latitude in decision making and intitative than was the case with Soviet flyers. Or, are Russian air combat tactics pretty much the same?

It is sort of amusing that the Russians are having to catch their forces up to what they exported to Indian in the Su-30mki.
