I wasn’t there to see it, but I have read, too, that the anti-war protests during the Vietnam era fell off once the draft was ended. Suddenly they seemed to lose all that anger for the poor Vietnamese and their fellow Americans when they were no longer in danger of being drafted themselves.
The draft was a major factor - no doubt about it - but the main thing was the fact patriotic Americans like the National Guard at Kent State showed they would use deadly force to defend liberty.
1970 was the turning point, no doubt about it, and the Left wimped out. They suddenly discovered it much safer to put on the coat & tie and work from within the government.
The same as the fervor for anti-war protesting stopped when Obama was elected.
“the anti-war protests fell off... once the draft was ended.”
As a Vietnam vet I recall how true that was. I still hate the filthy draftdodging b@stards. And a visit to the Wall doesn’t help, believe me.
Thank G-d I got back in the military and served long enough to see it become once more a beloved part of our society.
You are correct, FRiend.
