Because he took us forever away from the original concept of state’s rights and down the path of ever bigger and more controlling central government.

I guess if I couldn’t hold my own in an intellectual argument I would resort to name calling as well.

Well, there you go, NS. You and I have a civil exchange...I make a gracious comment...and then I’m attacked for it. Conspicuously absent in their comments is any rebuttal to the points I made.

Nuff said.

That must be why name calling is your stock in trade.

I would say it differently. It is certainly POSSIBLE that such a thing could have happened. There are lots of reasons to believe it would have been different, and many to believe that it would have ended up the same.

I would submit that the odds were so stacked against the confederacy that it's inconceivable that they would have turned out any other way. In the first place there is the precedent set by Davis and his confederate congress; the ignoring their constitution at will, the consolidation of power in Richmond at the expense of the states and the people, and the willingness to suspend civil rights among other things. All have been justified by your compatriots as war measures that would quickly have been dropped once the war was over. But if such actions are justified because of the threat from the Yankees, that threat doesn't go away just because peace breaks out. You still have a pissed-off Yankee horde on your northern border, a nation to build, and a lower-class white population to keep in check because the original confederate founding fathers weren't big on sharing power with them. Then there is that one-third of your population that isn't white. Slavery would have ended eventually, I don't think anyone disagrees with that, but what do you do with millions of non-citizens within your borders? Can't get rid of them; who would do the work? Can't make them citizens; they might want to vote or something. How to keep them in line?

I think it's easy to see a situation where the confederacy evolved into different things for different people. For people like you and me - educated, reasonably affluent white guys - maybe it would seem like the non-intrusive government you hope it would be. For lower classes it might have been an entirely different matter. Either way I think that the complaints you make about Lincoln would certainly have existed in your confederacy. You could have been screwed no matter what.

Hey Johnny Reb, take a moment from calling me childish names and listen up. Have you ever heard of The Civil War Preservation Trust? It’s an organization of men and women from around the US(even Yankees!) who donate their time and money to preserving Civil War/War of Northern Aggression battlefields that are in danger of being lost to development. Do you know some outfit wants to build a huge casino/hotel just a mile from the site of Gettysburg? I donate as I can. You can too at www.civil war.org Do something worthwhile besides calling me names and check it out.

Because he took us forever away from the original concept of state’s rights and down the path of ever bigger and more controlling central government - killing 600,000 people in the process and subjugating a Nation's sovereignty and burning and pillaging all the way through.

Sorry had to fix that one.

Assumptions can often and most always are wrong.

Not just assumptions, yank. I've got plenty of experience with yankees to support my claims.

The question is how can you deny my assertion that the north would be a communist state if it wasn't for the South when the data is against you?

Jim Crow. The Klan. Lynching. Segregation. Gun control. Funny you should mention those things. All bought courtesy of the Democrats.

Once again, noob, you're not familiar with history:

The organization reached its highest point of power during the years that followed, and by 1925 over half the members of the Indiana General Assembly, the Governor of Indiana, and many other high ranking members of the government were all members of the Klan.

The general assemblymen, the governor and other high ranking government officials were mostly Republicans, noobie, so it looks like your statement from above is simply incorrect. Perhaps you should do a little research prior to shooting off your mouth.

So you’re a Southerner are you?

An unreconstructed Southerner, noobie. So, you're a yankee are you?

They can call themselves Republicans. Not in my book. I used to be a Democrat. Twist it any way you want Johnny Reb. You Dixiecrats were and still are the racists and the leftists. You always have been. The Klan doesn’t wave The Stars and Stripes and you know it.

WE’RE tiresome?! LMAO!

Here’s a suggestion to make “us” less tiresome. Actually try to rebut comments and statements with facts rather than just call people names. You will be amazed at how trying to form rational, logical thoughts can stimulate the brain.

Of course, I suspect you are amazed by pinwheels.

“That must be why name calling is your stock in trade.”

Yes. I do sometimes call people names after they attack me. But I’ve also made statements to which you apparently are unable to form a coherent rebuttal, only insults and name calling. Again, I challenge to go back and actually respond to my comments rather simply call me names.

Your refusal to do so so far exposes your lack of intellect embarrasses all on this thread.

“I would submit that the odds were so stacked against the confederacy that it’s inconceivable that they would have turned out any other way.”

I disagree, but it is impossible for either of us to prove ourselves right, leaving us with nothing but opinion and guesses.

“All have been justified by your compatriots as war measures that would quickly have been dropped once the war was over. But if such actions are justified because of the threat from the Yankees, that threat doesn’t go away just because peace breaks out.”

I believe your point fails at the word “threat”. The measures were not justified (by either side) because of “threat”. They were justified because of the existing state of war. Any government’s laws and rights will be tested during a state or war. Whether the Confederacy would have fully returned to the premise of state’s rights after a victory is anybody’s guess. Our different opinions can not be proven. But what we do know with absolutely certainty is that the United States’ government has marched steadily and continually on toward absolute central control.
