Is there that much of a difference between an advisor that gives bad advice to the _resident, and an advisor that gives good advice that the _resident ignores?

There sure is. It is the perception to the troops. Who has their back? Who in this administration has been in their boots? A lawyer being the intermediary to the military? Especially one who is known for his disdain to those in uniform.
