My daughter “Snoped” this and said it is all false. This was a government project to actually save the eggs for incubation. I did not snope it myself but just going by what she told me.

It’s hard nowadays trusting Snopes after it was found out that they were a liberal couple living in Los Angeles.

My daughter Snoped this and said it is all false. This was a government project to actually save the eggs for incubation. I did quite a bit of online research about this around 1 or 2 years ago. The project is regulated by the government, but it is true that a cooperative run by townspeople legally harvest and sell the eggs.
My recollection is that some conservationists had some complaints about the way the townspeople were running the program and associated corruption, but it was allowed to continue.
