Every October, stores become a sea of pink as shelves fill with products adorned with pink ribbons or repackaged in pink as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's all seen as a feel-good win-win: Consumers get the products they want while helping out a great cause. What could be wrong?
Lots, say groups and breast cancer patients who are sick of companies trying to push shoppers into thinking that pink candies, pink toasters and pink spatulas will make a dent in curing cancer.
It's bad enough, they say, that corporations are profiting off the pink ribbon and the disease that left them feeling anything but pink. It's worse when those companies "pinkwash": hitching a ride on the pink ribbon bandwagon to sell products actually linked to cancer.

There have been several threads on the growing backlash to the pink campaign. More evidence here. Comments to the article are interesting, too.
You just pushed a big button....I HATE THE PINK MAFIA!!!! I am so sick of PINK I want to puke.
Thank you. While not a breast-cancer victim myself, at least yet, I've been unhappy that the pink glow emanating from the media actually dulls our awareness of the issue.

“The Beautiful Truth”.
I donate nothing to cancer research or cancer organizations. I do not consider them my friend. Sure, the rank and file are “useful idiots”, so I don’t blame them. They mean well, as do many liberals...
I have Prostate Cancer and have seen the money from donations dry up in large part because of the PINK Mafia! The standard company answer is: We already gave to the Pink Mafia, so we can’t help you. BC is down the list of killer-cancers, but if you dare say anything against the Pink mafia you will risk be labeled something on the same line as a “racist.”
She said it in a joking way, but as I've been saying on previous threads ANY campaign for consumer awareness, or just plain celebrity-style overexposure, can become obnoxious.
The wise proponent keeps a sharp eye out for signs that that is happening and takes steps to keep the focus on the actual cause -- often by SCALING BACK the overexposure.
I actually avoid “pink” products.
Me too.
I think education & prevention are laudable goals. Believe me, we women know about breast cancer now.
Younger girls are terrorized by this stuff.
I agree with you and would venture a guess that now would be a great time to scale back the pink operations. I have seen several articles lately, and even Rush commented on it yesterday as it relates to the NFL game the other night.
I will start taking the interest in breast cancer seriously when somebody does a study with women who have NEVER taken birth control pills as the control group.
Seventy per cent of the U.S. is made up of aggrieved minorities in one way or another!
Funny thing is when we all stopped caring about the false charges of racism, we tend to stop caring about being called evil woman killers by the pinkos.
I for one feel so refreshed having shed the fear of being labeled a racist. If we, as a group, get past that fear you will see a change for the better in or lives and nation.
Personally I refuse to buy any product that has been pinked.
I’m happy that I’m not the only one who hates the pink campaign. If all the money spent on pink decorations for various store chains were spent on breast cancer research, it would be much better spent, IMHO.
Susan J. Komen Foundation is big buddies with Planned Parenthood Baby Killers. I do not support the pink crusade in any way and would have no trouble explaining why, if I ever found a liberal fascist who cared enough to listen.
Every year some yogurt company says they’ll donate 10 cents for every yogurt top customers send in. Excuse me, but that is the dumbest idea I’ve heard all week. If they wanted to donate, then donate freely without making the customer send in their garbage. And garbage it is - nasty rotted yogurt encrusted tops that customers have licked on. Besides, how much extra expense is being used to truck garbage across the country? The customer has to put on a 44 cent stamp and lets say another 5 cents for the envelope (or however much envelopes cost), then there’s the return label and whatever time is involved and I’m not even going to talk about how un-green the process of mailing is. Bottom line, at the very least, that’s 50 cents on the customer’s part (plus the cost of buying the “pat yourself on the back for doing a good deed” yogurt) to the company’s 10 cent donation. Ok, so stuff the envelope with several tops but then how many until you have to add another 44 cent stamp? It’s just plain ridiculous!
Ok, I made the effort to search out the name and wouldn’t you know it, it’s Yoplait. Yep, that French company that I’m still boycotting so this is just one more reason to continue to boycott them.
Take a look at how much Susan J. Komen Foundation spends on salaries and administration. Unbelievable.
Thank you for commenting on this. There’s so much “awareness” of breast cancer that all the other cancers are losing funding.
The fastest growing cancer in the U.S. is Thyroid. It gets very little funding. Some other cancers on the steady rise, such as Melanoma and Kidney, get practically zero funding for research and treatment options.
It’s very noble that people have gone “Pink”. Now it’s time to start focusing on cancers in general and raise overall awareness on the nation’s leading killer.
