Coinciding with a tightening of laws around prostitution another tolerated industry the authorities new stance on cannabis is raising questions as to whether Dutch society is moving away from laisser-faire traditions.
The equation that led to the policy of tolerance has changed in the past decade, as large-scale crime around both coffee shops and the legal sex trade became more visible.

They should have out right legalized it, then there would be need for criminals to have a role in ones choices as a free society..sure there are criminals, one can buy it, but
they have to get the supply from the black market, thats the criminal element...
I do not consume pot, but I have been to Amsterdam, stayed across the street from the red light district at the Crown Plaza, upscale motel, and several coffee shops, went in and spoke with the people, folks from all walks of life all over the world from Movie stars to Doctors and lawyers..a pleasant experience...no crime outside...if the free societies would keep their friggin lets crucify folks on pot mentality out of others business and just let it be..there would be no crime in it..let folks grow it at home

Dude, yer harshing by buzz dude! VOTE RON PAUL!
(lol)
The drugs aren’t the problem here. They had legal drugs and prostitution for decades with no problems. Any guesses as to what changed?
Immigrants.
Amsterdam has long been known for several things, including its major hub airport, its fantastic fine art, its tourism, that it is a large hub for religions—loaded with missionaries, its legal and orderly prostitution, and its semi-legal “soft” drugs—though hard drugs are discouraged.
Most of all, Amsterdam was long known for its unusually friendly and helpful attitude. Returning to the US after visiting there for a while, and America feels strict, uptight, prudish, less friendly, and aggressive.
Immigrants have been changing Amsterdam, and not for the better.
Leftists intentionally opened the gates wide, with the understanding that immigrants would all vote for the leftists, and cement their political power. The Muslim immigrants came for the extensive largess, and the eastern European immigrants came to takeover legitimate “underclass” businesses and convert them to criminal enterprises, as they are in the rest of the world.
This means that Amsterdam was flooded with eastern European prostitutes, many of whom were coerced and threatened by their owners into illegal and unregulated prostitution; and they also tried to take over the drug trade, turning a small scale, semi-legal business, into the hard criminal enterprise based on hard drugs and violence.
Looks like there is a need for Geert Wilders.
It wasn’t tolerance. It was stupidity. Holland’s stupid policy of allowing drugs, prostitution and immigration from angry-hate-filled middle eastern countries didn’t work!
Ron Paul voters all across the country are canceling their plane tickets to Amsterdam.
Legalizing this crap only makes the social problems it produces much worse - why? Because it makes it more accessable and “acceptable”.
Alcohol useage is by far a much bigger contributor of devasting problems to our society than illegal drugs. This is because alcohol is so easy to access - it’s a legal drug, people have it in their homes, it doesn’t have the negative “stigma” that illegal drugs have.
Alcohal abuse is a much bigger problem with kids simply because it’s so easy to get.
Alcohol is here to stay, but legalizing pot and other drugs will vastly increase their usage and the drug problems we already have .
There are still people who don’t use drugs simply because they are illegal - removing that will also remove one less barrier for some people to go ahead and try it.
And, another thing, the criminal element will not be eliminated by legalizing it. They’ll just sell it even cheaper than you can legally and improve accessability.
Oh, and by the way, I don’t want to live in another “Amsterdam”.
It's an embarrassment anyone at FR wouldn't have understood that a long time ago. I'm tired of having the conservative movement infiltrated by idiots.
Well, it impacts my quality of life, so it is my business.
The Leftists probably thought the same thing about those who like to use soft drugs and prostitutes.
Good points about immigrants. Even ultra-libertarian Milton Friedman finally realized we could not have open borders and a welfare state. Because, guess what? Billions of people would come for the freebies.
Likewise, open markets in drugs — hard or otherwise — also lead to an influx of bad characters.
I would care...but I am so baked right now...ohh...is Doctor Who on now? Gotta go...I just lovvvvvveeeee the new title designssssss

I see your point but disagree..It is very accessable to elementary school kids..sad but true, and if it was legalized the folks who wanted to smoke could grow their own, you fail to mention all the decent folks who have been arrested or jailed for simple possesion that ruined their life.. I am sure everyone has done something they regret in life, but not everyone goes to jail for it..it is simply stupid to prosecute marijuana...However, cocaine , heroin, prescription addictions need to be met with an aggressive rehab program, mixed with some skill building so folks who have become addicts have a way to make a living..
Dealers of cocaine and heroin should go to jail..
I don’t see the social problems you speak of, As I said, I am a Chriostian, I do not do drugs, I do not solicit prostitutes, But I have known people who smoked who you would never know did..It is a shame to treat adults with such arrogant disrespect for their freedom, to tailor their lifestyle to someone elses opinion of how they should live their life.,.
Amsterdam is a nice large city, I enjoyed the Van Gogh and Tropics museums, it is not some scummy back room Mogadishu hellhole.. I am not a big city guy, but some of our cities look much worse..
Good points in all you say. I think the Dutch have seen the hand writing on the wall and are doing this before Sharia Law makes them stop it all together.
Ok. Lets bring back alcohol prohibition. That was a big success. (s.)
