Waco, Texas (CNN) -- The volunteers file into the steamy campaign headquarters wearing bright red Chet Edwards T-shirts. A group of old men pull their "Vets for Chet" hats down tight, waiting for the congressman to fire up the troops. "I think they might have predicted our demise a little too soon," an energetic Chet Edwards tells the crowd to a round of cheers. A young volunteer turns to a friend and says he's eager to help the long-term Democratic congressman because, "he needs all the help he can get."
The dozens of supporters standing in the room know Rep. Chet Edwards is in the toughest fight of his political life. Edwards has long defied the political odds in Texas -- a Democrat repeatedly elected to Congress since 1990 in one of the most conservative districts in the country. The district includes Waco and Bryan-College Station, home to Baylor and Texas A&M universities, both bastions of conservatism.
In 2004, John Kerry received 30 percent of the vote in Edwards' congressional district. In 2008, then-Sen. Barack Obama managed 32 percent. Each time, Chet Edwards was elected back to Congress. His political survival skills even catapulted him to the shortlist of potential vice presidential nominees for President Obama in 2008.
Flores had a 10-point lead in mid-September. An Edwards Campaign poll this week says the congressman has cut the lead to four points. But the Flores campaign fired back with its own internal polling taken September 23 that shows Flores with a 19-point lead.

As well they should - the Bastards!
Aggies and Bears should put him out on the street and into the unemployment line.
Gig’em right out.
Yes.
.........
AND ALL TEXANS NEED TO DONATE TO FREEREPUBLIC. As we all know, FR has worked in the trenches for FOURTEEN YEARS.
a SMALL DONATION IS NOT TO MUCH TO ASK, NOW IS IT?
They should put up 10,000 signs with pelosi’s face—
VOTE FOR CHET! NANCY NEEDS HIS VOTE!!!
But this may be the election cycle that finally does it.
Chet “Dimples” Edwards is Nancy Pelosi’s favorite Blue Dog. That so many old vets and Aggies fall for his conservative act every two years makes one wonder.
And why haven’t some enterprising reporters asked him why he voted for Pelosi’s Iraq surrender-date bills if he was such a friend to the military?
Great idea. I think TN or GA pawned that Dem who beat the kid up with the video camera. The guy who was screaming “who are you.” They posted little “who are you” signs next to his campaign signs. Hilarious.
I think your idea may be even better.
Flores is kicking Chet’s @ss. It’s way past time for this Dim to be sent back home to get a real job.
Gigem right out.
You guys should be informed that the word "Aggie" is no longer considered politically correct. From now on, you should refer to persons from that school as "Agro-Americans."
Furthermore, when discussing both Baylor and A&M in the same sentence, you should combine both school mascots and more accurately describe them as "Baggies."
Sincerely,
Hook'em
Zakeet...I find it hard to dignify that with a reply.
As one Texan Agro-American to another fellow Texan, “Farmer’s Fight! Farmer’s Fight! Whoop!”
Now, let’s pick up our pitchforks and torches and gig’em all out and take the power out of this tyrant’s hands.
fyi
Okay, that was funny!

Thanks for the ping. This past week Chet’s ads have painted Flores as a crooked businessman and have tried to convince vets that Flores wants to privatize the VA. Such a sack of lies, he should be ashamed but that’s how desperate he is.
and have tried to convince vets that Flores wants to privatize the VA.
I see a lot of “Vets For” signs in my travels and to the best of my knowledge or at least the ones that stick with me are for Democrats. I’m not sure what Org this group is or how they are aligned. It maybe signs from the democratic org as I see White has signs “Republicans For Bill White” on his web site.
There are several vet groups that have endorsed Edwards so maybe one of them paid for the signs you’ve seen. He’s been doing a “Vets for Chet” tour. I don’t think he can continue to milk this much longer. Ft. Hood hasn’t been in his district since the new lines were drawn in 2003. He was instrumental in preventing the closure of the Waco VA Hospital, but that was four or five years ago. I’ve yet to hear him lay out any vision for the district. Here’s a link showing his vet endorsements: http://chetedwards.com/2010/08/as-vets-for-chet-tour-continues-edwards-receives-endorsement-of-general-butch-funk/
