The Government of Australia has plans to procure up to 200 MK 54 All-Up-Round Torpedoes from US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) under the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) programme.
Under the $169 million contract, DSCA will also provide 179 mk 54 flight in air material kits, 10 mk 54 exercise sections, 10 mk 54 exercise fuel tanks, 10 mk 54 dummy torpedoes, 6 mk 54 ground handling torpedoes, support and test equipment to upgrade intermediate maintenance activity to MK 54.
According to the DSCA, the agreement will also provide technical and logistics support services and other related elements of logistics support.
Australia intends to use the MK 54 torpedo on the Lockheed/Sikorsky MH-60R helicopter.
The MK 54 torpedo is an upgrade of the MK 46 torpedo.
And the Mk46 has been around since Halsey .... 8<)
Yes, this is newer, better.
But it is too little to be truly effective unless it hits the prop and shaft seal.
And against a surface target? At least the larger ones on subs are multi-purpose. But a helo can carry nothing heavier.
