The zealots at the Environmental Protection Agency are poised to suck a trillion dollars and 7 million jobs out of the economy with an unnecessary and destructive change to pollution rules. Less than two years ago, the EPA set a ground-level ozone standard of 75 parts per billion (ppb), but Obama administration officials are looking to impose an even lower standard of 60 ppb by fiat. That seemingly small change will have sweeping effects throughout the economy.
Ozone is created when harmful emissions from cars and factories react with sunlight to create one of the building blocks of smog. Reasonable limitations on such pollutants are appropriate, but what the EPA proposes is far from reasonable. The likely standard is so low it approaches the natural background level of ozone found in many areas of the country. There is no new science compelling President Obama's team to change the rules, but they will have a significant impact on businesses still struggling to meet 2008 targets. Manufacturing plants already meet strict standards, but many will be forced to install expensive new equipment to reach the EPA's proposed levels. As all of the easy fixes for cleaning up emissions have been implemented already, incremental reductions come with a steep price tag. In the current rocky economy, imposing new costs is only going to thwart recovery.

They are unable to cripple American industry via cap and trade, so they are going to do it this way.
God help us. Can we remove this thing from office before he carries out his plan of destruction?
No wonder Dr. Sowell sounded so dispirited when I heard him last month...
Whatever ill effects ozone causes might be more than counteracted by the deleterious effects of letting more UV radiation burn more skin.
Isn't skin cancer one of the most deadly diseases that one can acquire?
It looks like that’s exactly what they’re trying to do and Dr. Sowell was well aware of it.
Republicans are going to have to defund the EPA as soon as they regain control of the House.
Then we can only hope this turkey isn’t reelected for another term but it would be nice to see an attempt at impeachment even if the Senate wouldn’t find a guilty verdict.
At some point someone in his own party is going to have to make the trip to the wh and get him out of there.
I hear you. There are different types of skin cancer but melanoma is very bad stuff.
I am feeling a complete meltdown coming from this wh.
Yep, he doesn’t give a whit about the country.
There are so many people around the world who are only familiar with America through our movies. Our movies typically shows the US as a rich wasteful nation in comparison to the third world countries and even Europe. Europe early on decided to preserve the hard earned money from their GDP from going overseas to pay for oil. They taxed energy severely, and limited the expenditures on urban sprawls. Hence, the people who watch our fancy living condition in our movies became jealous of us. In addition, leftists hate our big industry, and wanted to cripple us. So, we ended up with Europeans, who are more energy efficient then us demanding unsupported demand mostly to cripple us, and I would not be surprised if the Saudis are funding the environmental movements to stop us from building nuclear power plants.
Major Bump.
The long term solution is fixing the Clean Air Act but that would take a veto proof majority prior to 2012 at least.
In the meantime - the only feasible fix is to defund EPA and the associated funding the feds send to the states to carry out this crap.
Make no mistakes, we have multiple layers of beauracracy to deal with and we can't forget that the state level beauracrats will hold the water and carry out the mission if their federal masters are hobbled for a bit.
The defunding needs to happen deeper than just EPA.
“At some point someone in his own party is going to have to make the trip to the wh and get him out of there.”
Why should they make the trip to get him out of the White House?
He’s doing his job rather well, thank you, and complying with what Mr. Soros and his revolutionary minions expect of him. (And so is his party.)
IMHO
Iwas dreaming that the other night. People are going to have to get him out of here.
This whole thing is a commie coup.
Another Outrage! Exactly.
They continue to usurp our laws, usurp our Constitution, disrespect our way of life, and destroy our country...
Bit by bit...They take something away from us. Now they’re not satisfied with little bits. Now they want bigger and bigger chunks.
This cannot stand. We cannot allow this to stand.
Does it ever! Education is a major one but can you imagine the squealing from the NEA and their state affiliates should it ever be tried?
You're right, and I can't stand anymore of this.
Yes and no. I speak from experience, having fought skin cancer for the last 30 years.
There are three types of skin cancer:
Basal cell
The least dangerous type. If caught early (you are visiting your dermatologist at least once a year, aren't you?), it is easily removed, usually by freezing with liquid nitrogen.
Squamous cell
More dangerous. Removal may require surgery.
Melanoma
The most dangerous type. Will metastasize. Can spread to internal organs. Most people who die from skin cancer have melanoma.
Prevention is the best course. Stay out of the sun if you can. Wear a hat. And please stay away from tanning beds.
Disclosure: I am not a doctor. But I have many, many scars from skin cancer. Not pleasant.
These standards reach further than people realize. You have local and state clean air agencies that have various levels of authority and enforcement power, who use these kinds of regulations to set local standards, and declare “smog emergencies” and the resultant burn bans.
Here locally, the burn bans go into effect in the winter, usually during the coldest days when a temperature inversion might form, and the SW Washington Clean Air Agency issues either a Stage I or II burn ban. Stage II means no wood stoves at all, unless it is your primary heat system. All it does is spike the electric demand when everyone kicks on the heat pump or electric baseboard heaters all at once.
I swear, there is a segment of our society that will not be happy until we are all living in caves, or Communist Chinese re-education camps...
Before moving up here we lived in Jackson County, OR and they had the same type no burn regs in winter because of inversion layers on some days in the Medford Valley.
At least then people that only had wood heat could could burn but I don’t know what goes on now, I’d suspect they’ve phased them out. We used wood when we could but also had electric forced air.
The gov just keeps getting more and more intrusive in what we can and can’t do but this ozone and CO2 thing is really going over the edge, there’ll be big trouble if passed.
We have a newer stove that I easily heat the whole house with all winter long. It’s a nice step top stove that we can cook on, and have done a number of times. A cast iron Dutch oven makes a fine bean soup if it sits on a hot woodstove all day long. A cast iron skillet with a top on it bakes a fine pan of cornbread on top of the stove in about an hour too...
The woodstove gives us independence from the grid, but there is always someone out there trying to interfere with us no matter what the activity is, and no matter how hard we try to minimize the amount of energy we are hooked on.
I don’t think some of them would be happy if we lived in caves...
