Randy Moss: A steep risk-reward
ESPN.COM ^ | 10/6/2010 | Kevin Seifert

Excitement about Randy Moss' possible return to the Minnesota Vikings isn't just consuming the Twitterverse or the team's fan base. A certain quarterback's official Web site just put out an e-mail alert to subscribers.

The subject line: "Breaking News Randy Moss to the Vikings????"

And really, that's the rub. That's why the Vikings would even consider bringing back one of the most dynamic, divisive and volatile players in franchise history: Because they've already bent over backward to bring back quarterback Brett Favre for one more season, guaranteeing him $16 million for a final run at the Super Bowl. If you're going to make that type of commitment, why not take every step to make sure you've surrounded him with a comparable set of skill players?

Moss became a star with the Minnesota Vikings, but he also caused distractions -- as illustrated in this photo, when he pretended to moon the Green Bay crowd during a 2005 playoff game. One could argue that the Vikings' roster already has enough elite-level players to make a deep playoff run. But anyone who has watched their offense over its first three games of the season knows it could use a player to stretch the field. And as former Green Bay Packers executive Andrew Brandt has written, Favre once salivated over the possibility of the Packers acquiring Moss. As he demonstrated with Vikings receiver Sidney Rice last season, Favre loves the idea of a big receiver he can trust to catch the ball even if he's covered.

Good luck to the Vikings and remember, bring a huge checkbook, Randy requires it.

The Viqueens still suck and will choke in the end, so who cares?

Moss is boss. GB needed mooning that day. This Vikings fan is excited.

Just how old is that QB? They’d have to be the oldest passer-receiver combination in the game, no?

They are so Super Bowl hungry in Minnesota that they’re relying on players whose greatness is fading. If I were a Vikings fan I wouldn’t get too excited. With Moss, Favre will be putting the ball in the air a lot more and we all know what happens when he starts doing that.

Randy’s shelf life per team is around 3 years, so plan accordingly Vikings.

As a Patriots fan, I just don’t understand doing this deal; not now, and not for a third-round draft pick.

The words “class” and “ass” rhyme. But that’s as close as they get to eachother.

I thought Moss looked old in the Miami game Monday night.

He’s not as fast as he used to be, certainly. But he has been used more as a decoy lately than as a primary receiver. He draws double coverage on every down, which allows for more productive use of the tight ends underneath. He still has great hands, even despite having just missed that fake spike pass on Monday night.

The viqueens won’t even make the playoffs this year. farve is on pace to throw 30+ ints and 10 Tds. haha. The Packers shut moss down before and will do it again.

GO PACKERS!!!!

I think his value even as a decoy is on a steady decline as well. The Pats picked him up for a song got good use out of him, on borrowed time for several years, and just traded for their song back.

Favre still has his arm and his brains, the Vikings should have replaced their failing front line in my opinion, it doesn’t matter how great of receiver Moss is, he won’t catch anything with Favre on his back

Moss is beyond washed up. No explosiveness left.

I could certainly understand trading him at the end of the season. His contract is up and he almost certainly wants more guaranteed money and time than the Pats would be willing to pay him. Plus, the team already has excellent draft picks coming next year and another 3rd rounder would help along their youth movement, pending resolution of the NFL's CBA negotiations with the Players Union.

The problem is that right now, the Pats will be left without a genuine deep threat in a season where they have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. Tom Brady's not getting any younger, and while he still has Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez and Julian Edelman to handle the shorter routes, the team simply will not be able to stretch opposition defenses the way they used to. Perhaps they'll go with Brandon Tate in the WR role, but he's untested other than his present status as a tremendous return ball threat on special teams.
