If the Tea-Party-led Republicans take over one or both houses of Congress this November, we wont just see the end of any possible action on climate change or clean energy. They may well force a government shutdown, which will close our national parks, prevent food from being inspected, and stop any government oversight of coal mines or offshore drilling or clean air and clean water, for that matter. Think Progress has two video interviews with the Senates leading government basher.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) sealed his status as the rights standard-bearer when he brought the Senate to a virtual halt this week by threatening to hold all legislation unless it had been preapproved by his office. Though DeMint insisted that this unprecedented move was simply an effort to allow his office to read and consider pending legislation, the senator made his true intentions clear on the Focal Point radio program preventing the government from functioning.
Speaking with host Bryan Fischer, DeMint argued that this idea that government has to do something is not a good idea. He then went on to insist that the less we do, the better:
FISCHER: Do you think some kind of gridlock is possible and what do you think will happen if that ensues?
DEMINT: Well I had a group of businessmen tell me the other day if you can just stop the tax increases on us and then have two years of gridlock, that would be the best thing that could happen for business because at least we would know what to expect. Right now they dont know what the government is going to do to them next.

BINGO
The era of repeal.
Take a pickaxe to the damn federal government.

A hundred million or so Americans said the same thing.
Start with eliminating every federal department and agency formed since 1960. With the exception of Defense, all remaining departments and agencies at 1980 budgets.
That would be awesome - a lean, mean Federal form of government that’s focused on security, and enforcement of the Constitution. Just image...
Now yer talking!!
RUN Jim, RUN!!
My sentiments, exactly.
You know there are there are mans activities that can be contributed to the issues that were dealing with now, these impacts. Im not going to solely blame all of mans activities on changes in climate. Because the worlds weather patterns are cyclical. And over history we have seen change there. But kind of doesnt matter at this point, as we debate what caused it. The point is: its real; we need to do something about it.
I’ll say it again.. the legislative branch of government should be a part time job at best and only be assembled when there’s a real crisis, not manufactured one, to deal with.
We don’t need full time law makers because we’re over burdened with the asinine laws they try to force on us to fix problems they created in the first place.
Government NOT doing anything would prevent further damage to America but they need to repeal and eliminate many of the laws they have implemented.
.. prevent food from being inspected....overrated government function-the "death penalty" is already there from capitalism's invisible hand, for any company that ships tainted food.
... and stop any government oversight of coal mines or offshore drilling.....and the problem with this is?
I like the sound of that..
...and this is a bad thing?
When the choice has been given by the ruling class— that we need to pass a law to see what is in it— that we need to do something— that we need to pass bad legislation in order to “fix it later” only kicks the can down th eroad and fixes
nothing except Democratic Party Power.
I agree and believe we should go one better, cut down the size of the executive branch too. Too many bureaucrats with nothing to do but dream up problems to suggest more legislation. We have a legislature and and executive department and agency policy writing machine operating in a symbiotic relationship on steroids. Constitution? No problem for them, they just ignore it. Until there was some push back from financially strained states, like now, there was no stopping this machine. We either stop it now or get run over for good.
He’s right. Our constitution creates a government designed not to work unless there is general agreement on what it should do, general agreement both now and averaged over the six year term of the Senate. If we can’t agree, the government isn’t supposed to do a thing. It’s called checks, balances and the default being personal liberty.
Sounds like a true Conservative. The less government, the better. Me, too.
Congress hasn’t got one right since declaring war in 1941.
Leftists always resort to the straw man argument. The Leftist characterizes the rejection of the statement “Government has to do something” as the government must never to anything or even exist. The Left likes to mis-characterize the conservative belief as being government should not exist because it is wrong, extreme and easily dismissed. Most conservatives believe that the government should be limited as prescribed by the Constitution. Conservatives do believe in a limited, decentralized and efficient government.
I was at a health care meeting about a year ago and liberals tried to falsely claim if conservatives opposed socialized health care, they should also be against fire, police and emergency services because after all these services are run by the government. Again, the classic straw man argument was employed.
When conservatives define the limits of government they point to the Constitution. However, the Leftists never can state the limit of government whether it be income taxes, medical privacy, free speech, gun rights etc. For the Leftist the ends justify the means. And those ends usually result in the authoritarian, totalitarian state.
