The masks are off now because middle America has been trained to think that calling a group marxist is just name calling. No thinking allowed . . . self-censorship at the level of information allowed to be considered. If they don’t hear it from CBS or PBS they don’t consider it, and if a neighbor tells them, they just rethink their relationship with the neighbor. If they see it only on the internet it’s just “those wackos on the internet.” The left has propagandized itself as well, so they don’t think they need to hide anymore.
BUT, if people hear something often enough, there is a time when it does sink in and the person does have to think about it.
