The Taliban is out in Afghanistan -- well, in the videogame version anyway.
Following a backlash from military families and politicians, Electronic Arts has modified its latest version of the "Medal of Honor" series so that the game no longer pits U.S. troops against the Taliban.
The multi-player format game, set in modern-day Afghanistan, was initially designed so that players would either inhabit the role of coalition forces or enemy fighters, labeled as the Taliban.
British Defense Sec. Liam Fox also spoke out against the game, saying, "At the hands of the Taliban, children have lost fathers and wives have lost husbands. I am disgusted and angry.
The Pentagon even responded, banning sales of "Medal of Honor" from U.S. military bases.
Responding to the criticism, EA Executive Producer Greg Goodrich announced on Friday the company had adjusted the game to be more sensitive to the military.
"Because the heartbeat of Medal of Honor has always resided in the reverence for American and Allied soldiers, we have decided to rename the opposing team in Medal of Honor multiplayer from Taliban to Opposing Force," he wrote in a statement on the "Medal of Honor" website.

Good. The less they are promoted the better.
You know what I mean when I say "promoted". I just can't think of a better word.
America has become a nation of whiners.
Don’t these clowns know that political correctness is sooooo 1992?
Free Republic has become a nation of whiners as well.
This is pretty much a liberal/pacifist cause. Active military and veterans see this as valuable stress relief.
I am still on BF1942 and BF Vietnam.
This isn’t America we grew up in.
BF3 should be out next year.
Better not tell them about Allied General for DOS, then.
Idiotic. Are they going to ban being the Nazis in WWII games as well? Hopefully someone will provide a hack to stop this idiocy.
Just do what Hollywood does; make the bad guys in Afghanistan white skinheads.
It's been awhile since I've played but I don't recall being able to play as Waffen-SS. Heck, I don't think I remember any swastikas.
Besides, something tells me that if this technology did exist back in 1944, I don't think Ike, Patton, Bradley, etc., would voice their support for being able to play the "Nazi" side in the game with that WWII thing going on and all.
I can deal with them not being called "Taliban". Of course that means they can't call them just generic "Islamic Terrorists" so we get stuck with OPFOR. At least they didn't go the same route as the movie "Sum of All Fears" and turn the bad guys from Islamofascists into Nazis.
“At least we can still shoot the “Opposing Force”.”
Only after read through the rules of engagement.
Bah. Hacked, edited and old versions will be pirated all over the muslim world faster than you can say “allahu akbar”.
Ive been a 2142 addict since the day it was released.
Can’t wait.
They bettert not F it up.
