The American Future Fund is spending more than half a million dollars to try to oust Colorado Democratic Rep. Ed Perlmutter, a huge sum in a district less competitive than others where the group is playing.

The $560,000 is for both an ad buy and a field campaign — the only district where AFF is funding a grassroots component, AFF founder Nick Ryan told POLITICO.

Perlmutter is facing Navy veteran Ryan Frazier, a Republican with considerable support from the national party. The 7th District is outside Denver and favors the Democrats — voters picked President Obama in the 2008 election 59 percent to 40 percent. Two other Colorado districts are considered more competitive: the sprawling 4th District, where freshman Rep. Betsy Markey is running against Republican Cory Gardner, and the 3rd District, where Rep. John Salazar is running against GOPer Scott Tipton.
