Exclusive: Gibbs eyed for DNC chair By: Mike Allen October 2, 2010 09:41 AM EDT
Democratic insiders are taking the temperature of some top party donors about the possibility of naming White House press secretary Robert Gibbs as chairman of the Democratic National Committee heading into President Barack Obamas reelection campaign in 2012, senior officials tell POLITICO.
Under the scenario being tested, Tim Kaine, the current DNC chairman and former governor of Virginia, would be named to a top administration post, perhaps in the Cabinet, the officials said.
Donors response has been positive, according to people who have been consulted.
Gibbs, one of the presidents closest confidants, already had been planning to leave the podium next year, perhaps to become a White House senior adviser.
Gibbs joined Obama in April 2004, as communications director for his U.S. Senate race, and later was his Senate communications director. Gibbs was communications director of Obamas presidential campaign before becoming senior strategist for communications and message during the general election.
The logic for a Chairman Gibbs, according to one official: It would put the Obama imprimatur on the DNC, once and for all, and install a great partisan fighter as the face of the national party for the reelection campaign. Its a brilliant idea if he ends up deciding he wants to do it, said one official who has been consulted.

Send in the Clown!
Great idea! I’m all for it! Gibbsy would be GREAT.
Oh no, not him. Please, anyone but ROBERT GIBBS!
Not too early to be planning for the 2012 Senate race. You know who might take on Webb? I think he can be defeated. His is one of the seats that has to flip if Republicans are to retake control then, or solidify their majority if they get a miracle this year.
Just as I suspected. Thanks for the confirmation.
I know the MRIs are interchangeable, but would you care to share the name of the particular liberal in this scan? My guess is Pelosi. It’s the eyes.
