Mexican Pirates Shoot US Jet Skier Near Border on Falcon Lake, Texas

US authorities and outraged Texans are pondering a plan of action to deal with Mexican pirates after a US jet skier was shot Thursday and his fleeing wife chased onto the US side of a border lake.

The shooting on Falcon Lake, part of the Rio Grande watershed near Zapata, Texas, follows a months-long surge in attacks by drug-cartel-linked pirates on US boaters who have crossed into Mexican waters. It is the first instance in which an American has been hurt.
"Piracy on Falcon Lake is an incredible story, especially when Somali piracy has been so much in the news," says Robert Chesney, a national security and terrorism expert at the University of Texas School of Law, in Austin. "It's amazing to think that it's actually happening on the Texas border."

On Thursday, a couple from McAllen, Texas, rode their jet skis into Mexico to take a look at a favorite tourist spot, a famous church in Old Guerrero. At around 2:30 p.m., on their way back, six gunmen in two boats approached the pair. The man, David Michael Hartley, was shot as the two sped away while his wife, Tiffany Hartley, sped to a nearby lakeside home to ask for help

Ya know, I don't think the Mexican got the "don't mess with Texas" memo.

Mexican Pirates Prey on Boaters on Texas Lake

Texas' Falcon Lake is best known for its sport fishing, but lately it's the armed Mexican pirates that have attracted quite a bit of attention.

In recent weeks, groups of men with assault rifles and high-powered machine guns have boarded leisure boats demanding drugs and cash, leading authorities to believe that drug cartels are operating on the popular bass-fishing lake on the Mexican border.

Texas authorities say they can do nothing to help boaters who cross the border to the Mexican side of the lake and find themselves in hot water.

OK...So what can Texas authorities do about the millions that disrespect our laws and enter our country illegally and commit more crimes here....

Oh wait...They can't do a damn thing about that either.

I'm Kathie Glass, Libertarian for Texas governor. My No. 1 issue is to secure our border using our Texas State Guard.

By the response to this thread Kathie, I don't think very many people care...It just doesn't look good. Ya know what I mean?

You’re right. Holder will not stand for any U.S. law enforcement types messing with what is going to be one of the DNC’s largest voter bases.

There is a legal concept in international law: "hot pursuit". It is specifically designed to apply to acts of piracy. I.e., situations just like this -- on the water.

Under the "hot pursuit" principle, law enforcement authorities and the military can pursue pirates beyond international borders (or, on the high seas, beyond the 3- or 12-mile limit) -- right up to the shoreline.

We haven't practiced this principle in some time -- preferring to let the UN or multi-national forces take the initiative. But, back when, the Barbary Pirates found out all they wanted to know about "hot pursuit".

Accordingly, if they wanted to, the Texas Rangers or the U.S. Coast Guard or a Naval Reserve unit could address this problem...and leave a few bodies and some wreckage floating on the surface of Lake Falcon.

Set the bait. Chase them down. Burn them to the waterline.

Jesus. It wasn't until the next to last paragraph that they mention that, um, Dave Hartley is "missing"...after being shot. While on the water.

You notice that too huh?

The whole article seems a white wash.

I think it also fails to say he was shot in the back of the head by the Mexicans....At least that is what I heard.

From what I've read in other articles this couple had crossed the border and was down in the Old Guerrero area. If so they had intruded into Mexico where the drug cartels run rampant.

Now that would be mean, wouldn't it?

Can't have that. The truth is too...true.

Well, I guess that justifies the Mexicans shooting this Texan jet skier in the back of the head, sending him to the bottom...

I'm surprised the U.S., or Texas has not declared a state of war with Mexico....

They've soft-balled this story from the beginning.

Don’t be surprised as this has been ongoing on Falcon Lake for some time now. Boaters get robbed when ever they cross into Mexico papers or no papers to enter. I’m not sure anyone else has been killed but the drug cartels don’t take kindly to strangers. It’s a shame but apparently the law enforcement isn’t going to stop it.

What do they have a buoy or a yellow strip down the middle of the lake warning you'll be murdered if cross on your boat or jet sky?

Sounds like a nice family vacation spot.

By the way, the drug cartels are into millions and billions of dollars smuggling dope. Most try to keep low profiles while making huge profits.

I'd say these are just your typical Mexican criminals and murderers that are robbing and killing people on the lake, not the "Drug cartels".
