Senators Ease Off Internet 'Censorship' Bill After Outcry (FreeRepublic could be Blacklisted)

Senate sponsors have eased off a bill aimed at cracking down on online piracy after an outcry from Internet engineers who say the proposal would effectively censor the Web.

The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act still would contain some highly controversial provisions, but senators proposed an amendment Wednesday to strip from the bill language that allowed the Justice Department to publish a blacklist of websites "dedicated to infringing activities."

Under the original bill, the Justice Department would be able to green light Internet service providers to go after those sites by providing them legal immunity.

The amendment also would lessen requirements on service providers to clean up their networks. But the bill would still give the attorney general broad new powers to seek court approval to shut down websites deemed dedicated to counterfeit material.

Internet advocates have warned that the change in law would open a door for a handful of people in the federal government to wantonly power off entire websites that may be operating legally under current law. Though senators suggest the bill would save jobs by cracking down on piracy, critics say it will hurt the economy by threatening fledgling companies whenever copyrighted material shows up on their sites.

Urge your Senator to vote No on this bill and keep up the pressure. They tried to sneak this through yesterday. And if you don't think it applies to any sites that you visit remember that FreeRepublic is routinely sued for alleged copyright violations. This Bill would give the powers the be the ability to order FR's ISP to take them down and give the government that power to order your ISP to blacklist FR.

Agree, Smogger. This is akin to LBJ authorizing local stations to blacklist The Smothers Brothers Comedy hour after they made fun of the then Dear Leader.

No, this is the regular copyright industry shills doing the bidding of their masters. Hatch is especially known to be in the pocket of industry. He's the one who previously tried to make it legal for the cartel to hack your computer if you're suspected of infringement, and tried to make it illegal to produce ANYTHING that could be used to induce copyright infringement, which would mean almost all electronic devices today.

Leahy is a common partner in crime of his. When they talk about how Hatch likes to join hands across the aisle, this is what they mean.

DON’T TRUST THEM! THEY’LL LET TIME TRANSPIRE AND SLIP IT IN WHEN EVERYONE STANDS DOWN. Just like it happened on Obamacare.

Can I say that I am sick and tired of hearing & reading & seeing efforts by Obozo's Dims to turn this country into a fascist dictatorship. Most of it is being done out in the open because of the collusion of the media. Each little piece seems innocent, but add them together and it is fascism, pure and simple. Where is the rich sugar daddy (the anti-Soros) who will buy up elements of the media and start publicizing the truth.

“Where is the rich sugar daddy (the anti-Soros) who will buy up elements of the media and start publicizing the truth.”

Could it be that, purely by historical accident, there just isn’t one?

To be tabled until they ram through “lame duck session” bills that they otherwise won’t be able to present for another 8-10 years.
