Are you sure about Long Island?
I’m a resident of Suffolk County, and I can’t just go and get a carry permit. Well...I COULD get one, if I get a “target shooting” permit, which would allow me to carry on my way to and from a pistol range. And ONLY to and from the range. I can get a household one, or a business one, but as far as I know, I am unable to get a regular old CARRY permit, for personal protection.
Unless something has changed in the last few years, I’m not sure you WOULD be able to carry here on the Island. Then again, perhaps you are grandfathered in? Suffolk county USED to issue them, but things changed a while back.
Regards,
PS: If I’m wrong on this, I do hope someone will tell me. I’d love to be able to get a permit, if it’s possible.
Maybe I’m wrong, but on the back of my license it says:
1. It is revocable at any time.
2. If issued outside of New York City, not valid to carry a weapon in New York City unless approved by the police commissioner of that city.
Not sure about Long Island. Is that in NY? Just kidding. Seriously though, do you have to go through NYC to get out to the Island? That might be the issue because you couldn’t carry while in the city limits even though you’re just passing through. Sort of like being “land-locked”.
I’ll call our pistol clerk and get back to you shortly.
Just got off the phone with our pistol clerk. She says she is not aware of any restrictions for Suffolk County. And that my permit allows me to carry concealed statewide except the 5 burroughs.
She suggested that you call your pistol clerk. Good luck on getting your permit! Let us know.
