L.A. broils with triple-digit temperatures - 109 Degrees!
LA Times ^ | September 27, 2010 | Kimi Yoshino and Catherine Saillant

Posted on 09/27/2010 12:53:32 PM PDT by Beaten Valve

The heat wave that has gripped Southern California reached a high point Monday afternoon, with triple-digit temperatures from the coast all the way inland.

As of noon, Weather.com reported that downtown L.A. was broiling at 109 degrees; Santa Monica hit 106, West Hollywood was at 111 and Long Beach was at 107.

The National Weather Service warned of extreme heat and red-flag fire dangers Monday. A small fire broke out in Ladera Heights but was quickly put out. Another small brush fire was contained Sunday night in South Pasadena.

On the energy front, California consumers are expected to use more than 45,000 megawatts by peak afternoon hours, said Gregg Fishman, a spokesman for Cal-ISO, which coordinates power for 85% of the state's grid.

Though the expected energy consumption is high for this time of year, increased usage is not expected to cause any serious problems, Fishman said. Still, Cal-ISO is recommending residents avoid using heavy appliances in the afternoon.

It’s 99 degrees here in Manhattan Beach!

My sympathies (really!!!)
I was in West Los Angeles in August/September 2005...got about the same
type of temperature treatment.

At least it was for just a week or two.
Here in Mid-Missouri this year, we had a MONTH of that sort of par-broiled hell.
And it KILLED enough turf in flyover country that maybe a hundred or so
golf courses had to close this year (according to Wall Street Journal radio).

And when winter sets in, G-d only knows if we’ll have -10 F nights and/or
a foot or more of snow.

LA/SoCal/Coastal CA is a strange place.
You never know when a killer heat wave will set in.
When I was in LA, someone told me about a freak heat wave in the late
1800s (or early 1900s) that rose to something like 125 deg F...
cattle died in their pasture, even with plenty of water available.

I hope that doesn’t happen again!

When I was in LA, someone told me about a freak heat wave in the late 1800s (or early 1900s) that rose to something like 125 deg F...

That occurred in 1859 in Santa Barbara. A freak superheated wind blew in over the Santa Ynez Mountains, raising the temperature to 133 deg. around 2 pm. By 5 pm, the temperature dropped to 122 (!), and by sunset 77. Only higher temp recorded in the lower 48 was l34 in Death Valley.

Makes today's 105 in Goleta look almost cool.

Hey! I was raised in So.Cal and how live in Tn. 109 is nothing compared to a heat index of 115 or 120. It is “DRY” heat. This is the climate from Hell here in West Tn.

Well......made it to Ventura, no marine layer, 92° ......but it beats 111 in Valencia. Unfortunately the McDonald’s we meet at has no air conditioning haha.
