NEW YORK – Conservative Party candidate Rick Lazio on Monday withdrew from the race for governor, a decision that helps the tea party candidate who beat Lazio in the Republican primary.

Lazio told The Associated Press that he wants to continue to influence the race and bring a workable job-creation program into a contest he says has devolved into name-calling between Republican Carl Paladino and Democrat Andrew Cuomo.

Yes, but please keep in mind that “Conservative Party” does not necessarily equal conservative/ism.

So: The Conservative line on the ballot, how is it going to appear to the voter? Lazio? Blank? Another candidate such as Paladino?

The Conservative Party is much smaller than the Republican Party. However, the Republicans usually need that line, as the Democrats need the Liberal Party line.

Lazio’s dropping out is a tremendous thing.

We’ll have to see if the Conservative Party can put Paladino on their line. Perhaps, because of the proposed judgeship for Lazio.

It was a big move by Lazio. Paladino is a bit of a character and a bunch of RINOs and Independents might have gone for Lazio on the Conservative line to avoid voting for either Cuomo or Paladino. Now, they will have to choose.

Paladino hasn't started hitting Cuomo yet in mass media - only mailings (which were pretty rough). Once he starts hitting what Cuomo did at HUD (the cheap money that made the Wall Street mortgage backed business possible), how much a tax and spender his Dad was, and what a nobody he has been as Atty General, he might just have a shot.

NYC has about 1/2 of the state population; “upstate” has the other half. “Upstate” is no fan of Cuomo - Paladino is a Buffalo guy. Enough angst, enough Democrats staying home (Senate seats to Chucky and Gillibrand seem relatively secure - but praying DioGuardi keeps moving up in the pools)and maybe, just maybe, Paladino has a shot.

Albany is so dysfunctional, most of us are sick about it. The corruption is everywhere. Paladino has had some issues, but if people can believe that he will go in and make a difference, he might just win it. Lazio getting out of the way probably helps 2% to 5% of the vote. Smart move by him.

Are there any conservatives left in NY?

*raises hand* And in Brooklyn to boot, too.

Thank God for small favors. In 2000, Rick barely “dropped in”; who is surprised now that he drops out?

I don’t know. We’ll have to see. Or maybe one of the other posters know.

I haven’t really heard anything about the race for the governorship in Brooklyn. What kind of pamphlets is Paladino’s camp sending out?

I’m wondering if the Conservatives have just so many days before the election during which they can put Paladino on the ballot.

It seems to me that the way is being cleared.

Sounds to me more like a way to get off the ballot rather than a “prize”. Having him in the judicial branch would seem to be a plus for all.

Well - Lazio lost the primary to Paladino 62/38 - It’s a stretch to call him ‘the man’, IMO. He bowed out for “his own political career”.
___________________________________________________________

Are you for real?

The context of my calling Lazio “the man” was to simply point out it was a good thing he dropped out. Remember Castle? Remember Murkowski? He could’ve made this a big pain in the A$$ and he chose not to.

Whether this decision was because of selfish reasons, or because he did the right thing is unimportant at this point.

I’m convinced some people need crap to bit*h about.

The Conservative Party can still put a substitute on the ballot line. Party Chairman Michael Long said the party will conduct a nominating convention Wednesday and it’s “very likely” that Paladino would be the pick, but that others could be nominated.(AP)

You might be surprised how many live nearby...Reminds me of the story of the lady who snuck her sign out to the car to go to a tea-party so her neighbors wouldn't see only to be greeted by several of her neighbors when she got there.

Looks like the Conservative Party will lose its ballot line, at least for the next 2 years.

I don't know about that. I intend to vote in their column. I hope they get 50,000 plus votes. The NYGOP is pretty stupid. Remember Scozzafava.
