Here’s my two cents, Charlie Baker- keep the change
By Howie Carr | Sunday, September 26, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Well, Charlie Baker, you finally get your wish - it’s a two-man fight now. Tim Cahill sleeps with the fishes, or maybe the tomatoes.

The problem is, it may have happened too quickly. The election is still five weeks away. The Democrats have plenty of time and money to dust you up, and let’s face it, Charlie, when it comes to posing as a regular guy from Harvard, you’re no Bill Weld.

As one of my listeners put it after listening to you, “He sounds like he has tassels on his loafers.”

You’ve been getting a lot of advice lately, Charlie, but most of it’s coming from people who will be voting for Deval at the end of the day. And that’s my first bit of advice - lose the “at the end of the day” verbal tic. It’s become as annoying as John McCain’s “my friends.”

Next, never forget that not being Deval is not enough. I know it’s a seductive proposition, especially with his persistent 51-53 percent unfavorable ratings in every poll, not to mention the 30 percent blanks he got in the Democratic primary.

But he’s the incumbent, and don’t underestimate how little it costs to buy the average hack. If you really are relying on the old Welducci playbook, which it often seems you are, I’d suggest you skip ahead to the later chapters - “How Cellucci Purchased a Few Mayors” and “The Balfour Years.”

Take Rep. Steve Tobin of Quincy. He’s retiring due to ill health - the voters got sick of him. You know he’d love Deval to hand him a clerkship. Sheriff Guy Glodis, ditto. Those Democrats lost, but they still have organizations, and now they’re staring unemployment in the face. I guarantee you a fat little elf named Tim Murray will soon be headed their way bearing gifts of the season - the lame-duck season.

Just as the pinky-ring unions did this week, almost all the Dems are going to fall into line, if only to protect themselves from the Dreaded Private Sector. That means you have to get everyone else - the people who actually work for a living.

Please, Charlie, get on board with Karyn Polito on Question 3, the ballot initiative that would cut the sales tax from 6.25 percent to 3 percent. The candidate for treasurer says a yes vote on 3 is the only way to repeal Deval’s 25 percent increase and get the tax back to 5 percent. She’s right and you know it.

But you’ve been saying the best way to cut the sales tax is to elect you. Huh? Isn’t that what Deval and Barack said too? Nobody’s going to be fooled a third time, Charlie.

Also, stop yapping about “red tape.” The anti-red tape crowd is already with you. And enough already with the bragging about how liberal you are on the social issues. One of the last straws Cahill is hanging onto is his Mass. Citizens for Life endorsement.

How about a 30-second spot tearing into “six-figure” state pensions (which is code for: I’m after the pols like Bulger, not the average state worker)?

Denouncing Cape Wind is another sure winner. Call it the “Cape Dig.” It’s Deval’s baby, he can’t deny that. Get some helicopter video of the British School of Boston on Moss Hill where all those National Grid Brits were enrolling their snotty kids and sending us ratepayers the tuition bills.

At the end of the day, you should still be able to pull this race out. At least as long as you don’t say at the end of the day.

The REAL DEAL:

Baker is a crypto-RomneyCARE crypto-ObamaCARE supporter.
He has no interest in citizen's Constitutional rights.

Baker increased premiums on health care by 150% even when the costs DECREASED.

Baker lied about Cahill who is against RomneyCARE and is not with Deval Patrick as some here, and Baker, claim.

How about some truth?

Charlie Baker - good news on all (page) fronts
By Howie Carr | Tuesday, September 28, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com

Wow, what great news for Charlie Baker in the papers over the weekend.

The Boston Sunday Globe reported that the Republican candidate for governor is running dead even with their hero, Gov. Deval Patrick.

If the bow-tied bumkissers claim that Baker is neck and neck with Mr. Deval “I Promise I’ll Cut Your Property Taxes” Patrick, I figure Charlie must be close to 20 points ahead. Whatever poll numbers the Globe pulls out of thin air about a Republican candidate, the customary mathematical formula is to add 20 points.

Remember the U.S. Senate race in January? Scott Brown seemed to be closing rapidly on the attorney general the Kennedys call Marsha Coakley. And then, nine days before the election, a devastating head-line at the top of the front page in the Sunday Globe designed to demoralize everyone who doesn’t have a trust fund:

“Senate Poll: Coakley up 15 points.”

Nine days later, she lost 52-47. That’s a 20-point swing, even though she was, as the Globe put it, “buoyed by her durable statewide popularity.”

Do you sense a certain nervousness bordering on panic amongst the Beautiful People in the media? That “durable statewide popularity” just doesn’t buoy them like it used to.

It must be tough in the newsroom, having to spike all those fun news stories about Democrat disasters: John Kerry’s daily botched joke, or the Hispanic California congressman issuing a racist broadside in Spanish against “the Vietnamese” trying to defeat her.

Or Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. caught with a blond, bikini-clad “social acquaintance” and New Jersey Democrats being sued for allegedly firing black canvassers in white neighborhoods and then sending out an e-mail about the new honky hires slugged “nobroslist.”

Nothing to see here folks, move along. How ’bout those Red Sox? When do the playoffs start?

The Globe ran another story on its front page Sunday - “Mass. may lose its clout in House.” Who says there’s no good news out there?

Now, if Mass. can just lose seats in the congressional redistricting . . .

Cahill’s against Romneycare? Will have to hear one of the debates to hear that from him.

Cahill was on Howie Carr (I think it was soon after he announced), and he called RomneyCare a “disaster for the state.” Unfortunately, he then opined that it couldn’t be repealed; if he gave a reason for that thinking, I either didn’t hear or don’t remember it.

I was channel surfing this a.m and I thought I heard Joe Battenfeld on RKO saying something to todd and the felon about getting his own show on RKO after Howie - did anyone else hear this?? I didn’t stick around long enough to find out when it starts and if he will be replacing Savage or if Savage will move into the 10 -1 time slot replacing Jerry Doyle. I don’t see anything on the RKO website.

interesting—I didn’t hear it but would not be surprised, even if it’s just temp till after the election. They’d need someone to cover election night, that’s for sure. Maybe Jessica Heslam at Herald will have story, or Mark Schnyder at Boston Radio Watch blog. Will ask around.

Wonder if maybe they may expand business block at noon and
put Manning on after Howie but you said you heard Battenfield claim this...was he joking that maybe he SHOULD get a show
or saying he would?

No I don’t think he was joking, he was asking todd and the felon to feed him info about the elections, so maybe it is just a temp thing to cover the elections, I wasn’t paying that much attention because I was changing stations and caught less than a minute of the conversation. I’m pretty sure he said he’d be on after Howie that’s why I’m wondering what will happen to Savage or Doyle.

Yup I posted about it on radio-info and someone said they doubted it though “Entercom has done stupid things before”.
They mentioned
—it would cost money
(well, RKO just got into some money with the midday show,
which is bought time)

—Savage gets good ratings at low cost
(this could be temp. just till after election)

—sports conflicts (there could be some; C’s games on EEI
after Sox finish on Sunday, maybe some MLB playoffs or
college sports on RKO)

—bad signal after dark (not where I work in N. Reading.
Actually could hear Mon Night Football game on RKO which
was bumped from 850 due to Sox

So who knows! Thanks for the tip

Midday doesn’t sound purchased, no numbers. Good show format I think the talk with money and politics collides.

Battenfield is good. Wouldn’t make a bad pick up during election coverage

Another judicial nominee acting injudiciously, or just dumb?
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, September 29, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

What would Gov. Deval Patrick do if he found out that one of his judicial nominees had a husband who threw a summer fund-raiser for his opponent, Charlie Baker?

OK, it’s a free country, but what if the judicial nominee had an employee at her law firm who went to the fund-raiser and was recorded as giving the legal $500 maximum to Charlie Baker? And what if the paralegal/secretary was listed on campaign finance reports not as an employee of the nominee’s law firm, but a lawyer, which she’s not, with her own private practice?

And suppose the judicial nominee, under questioning last week by the Governor’s Council, said her employee would “never” claim to be a lawyer with her own firm, although that’s exactly what she did, thereby freeing her of the obligation to list her employer’s unusual, easily spotted name?

And what if someone handed Deval a copy of the law that says that if you give $500, you have to state your employer, your name and address - truthfully?

Come on down, Lisa Poblocki, judicial nominee. And bring your employee, Linda M. Glennon of Weymouth, with you. Calls were placed to both women. When my phone didn’t ring, I knew it was them. Poblocki was questioned about Glennon last week at her hearing by Governor’s Councilor Mary-Ellen Manning, who has derailed two of Deval’s judicial nominees in the past two months.

Poblocki is married to a GOP fund-raiser named Richard Pilla. He’s maxed out already to Baker and his running mate Sen. Richard Tisei. He had a time for Charlie on July 7. Among the donors:

“Linda M. Glennon, Lawyer, Attorney at Law.”

Under questioning, Poblocki said Glennon was an “employee” of hers. A few questions later, she amended that to “1099” - independent contractor, I guess. Poblocki admitted knowing her husband raised dough for “a gubernatorial candidate,” as Manning put it, and that Linda maxed out at Baker’s July fund-raiser.

“Can you explain to me,” said Manning, “why Linda Glennon said she worked for herself as a lawyer in the law firm of Linda M. Glennon?”

“She doesn’t. She’s not - she’s not a lawyer. And she doesn’t work for herself.”

Manning asked why Glennon would claim to be a lawyer, rather than “self-employed,” or an employee of Poblocki & Lydon.

“I know she gave a contribution,” Poblocki said, “but I don’t know that she represented herself to be a lawyer. I’m fairly sure she didn’t.”

But she did. So, Linda, what kind of judge would you make, saying you’re “fairly sure” that something that happened - and is on the record - didn’t?

Hey Charlie Baker, the least you can do is send the $500 back - then issue a scathing press release - but wait until after the Democrats rubberstamp her today.

I only listen to Howie and Savage, so I’ll have to check next week’s schedule to see if I have to stream Savage next Friday. Did Mark S. mention if battenfeld is a temp thing til the election is over or will he be a regular feature on Friday nite?

I just found out—it’s for six weeks only from
Fri 10/1 thru Fri 11/5. I don’t know if Savage is being pre-empted or pushed back to 10—prob the latter. You could
try Savage streaming or maybe another affiliate if you’re
in range.

Your Herald columnist at work: Carr column derides judicial nomination

Patrick judge nomination halted amid alleged fund-raising breach
By Hilary Chabot | Wednesday, September 29, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | U.S. Politics

Gov. Deval Patrick hastily put the brakes on a judicial nomination today amid “alleged irregularities in political fundraising by the nominee’s spouse,” after a column in today’s Herald raised questions about campaign donations made by the nominee’s employee.

Chief legal counsel William “Mo” Cowan sent governors councilors a letter requesting they hold off on a scheduled vote for Lisa Poblocki while officials investigate whether Poblocki’s employee - who donated $500 to Patrick’s Republican rival Charlie Baker - was reimbursed by Poblocki’s husband, Richard Pilla, a well-known GOP fundraiser.

“Information has come to our attention about alleged irregularities in political fundraising activities by the nominee’s spouse that may have involved a part-time employee of the nominee,” Cowan wrote.

“While we do not believe that the nominee was involved in these matters, it seems prudent to take the time to look into the allegations prior to any further action on her nomination.”

Pilla did not immediately return a phone call for comment.

Governors Councilor Mary Ellen Manning, who spoke with administration officials this morning, confirmed that Patrick officials uncovered possible campaign donation violations.

“There were admissions made that the nominee’s spouse has reimbursed the employee in question for the $500,” Manning said outside Patrick’s office this afternoon.

Patrick officials also forwarded the matter to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance for further investigation, said an official briefed on the matter.

The Herald’s Howie Carr detailed serious questions surrounding a Baker donor, Linda Glennon, after Manning asked why Glennon failed to identify herself as Poblocki’s employee.

The investigation indicates another Patrick judicial nomination may be derailed. David Aptaker, recently withdrew his judicial nomination after he failed to disclose campaign contributions to controversy-plagued politicians - including former Sen. James Marzilli and former Register of Probate John Buonomo. Buonomo was sentenced for theft and Marzilli is facing sexual assault charges.
