In my mind, this is definitely a success. We’re in about a hour and he is on the last parts ... no longer growling!
Since my last post I cut off some meat pieces and cracked the bone [he was having problems with this]. A piece of marrow popped out and he gobbled it up. He has not stopped since then.
I am worried about choking. Have any of you had issues with choking?
I love that it has taken him an hour to eat. He has dragged it around and involved his neck muscles, jaws, teeth and all four feet!
However, I’m not sure he can self-regulate. :)
But I saw dramatic results with raw feeding chihuahuas. I’m hoping.
Good advice.
Switched my Labradoodle and Standard Poodle to a raw diet a month ago... cringed the first time they chowed down the bones.
But it was the best thing I could do for them... happier, their teeth are in beautiful condition... crap less (and when they do, it turns into chalk and dissolves in two days)... shinier, softer coats.
Turned them on to fish this week... took a couple whole trout and wiggled them in the stream water... dogs thought it was fun... let them catch in the water... they ran up the bank and devoured them. Teaching them to fish.
Raw food is digested within 5-6 hours... great for their system. Dry kibble food takes up to 15 hours to pass thru their system.
Dog food was invented in the ‘50s... gee, how did dogs survive without it?
My Aussie will cheerfully eat aluminum foil, toy soldiers, socks, horse poop and crayons. He tried a towel once, but threw it up before much was swallowed.
The wild coyotes around here will eat plants, seeds, small dogs, pack rats, and any moldy stuff I toss into my front yard. I’m pretty sure if I put dried dog food out, they’d line up and sing for their meals. The idea that wild canines eat beef is just silly.
My dogs have all lived to old age in good health with dried dog food. I see no reason to switch from what works, and works well.
It's kind of hard for me to be in your shoes since my dog weighed 20 lbs when he was 8 weeks old......so....a bit different.
I can tell raw fed dogs at the show grounds because they have beautiful necks, jaw muscles and have a "different" look to them.
Do you ever give them store bought fish, or only fresh caught? It’s hard to catch fresh in Los Angeles. :)
Fidel REFUSED to eat kibble, EVER. He would only eat cooked meat or canned food. After today, we’re not going back!
When you feed raw, put the food down, give him about 20 minutes and then pick up what he hasn't eaten. Sometimes it will be his whole meal, don't worry, just pick it up. Eventually, he will figure out he has to eat in a certain amount of time.
Another hint (although with a Chi you don't have to worry about cost too much) watch the weekly flyers. Once a week at one store or the other there will be chicken at $.49 a pound, buy a lot, cut it up into serving potions and freeze. Same with roasts, pork necks etc. Also watch the ethnic markets for odd cuts.

I understand that a raw diet is especially good for chihuahuas or small dogs as the have a lot of teeth in a very small jaw making them prone to periodontal disease.
He went through oner hour of intense chewing which should help his teeth and jaws. I will try you limiting time method tomorrow.
It is very easy to do. My dogs have eaten a raw diet for 12 years now. There is quite a few excellent yahoo groups dedicated to the matter that have been around for many, many years — since before I started feeding raw. I live in a small town and we have a natural food pet store so i don’t have to mail order any more and I’m really happy to see her store is getting busier and busier even though a Petsmart opened at our mall a year ago. At the very least don’t feed anything with grains or artificial food coloring and stay away from allowing the vet to over-vaccinate your pets.
Well, if you haven't done it why are you trashing it? I've fed raw for over 12 years and my dogs basically never see the inside of a vets office, no need to take them just to take them when they never get sick, have gleaming white teeth and good stools.

You can get raw meat at the grocery store, just remember if you are feeding without bones to add a dash of ground up egg shells to the meat. I have a good friend who’s five-year-old Maltese has lymphoma (in remission now thanks to Chemo) and she finally started feeding her dog a home-cooked slightly raw vs kibble and the dog is doing wonderfully. Once the dog is through Chemo she plans to go full raw. BTW I never feed my dogs chicken, I and my friends found it seemed to cause itching and when you realize vaccines are grown on eggs and the purpose of a vaccine is to mount atibodies it makes sense that they could have issues witch chicken. I feel beef, bison, venison, lamb, raw green tripe, etc.

When you say “some oils” you have to be careful because not all oils are created equally and if you are feeding meats that are corn fed the Omega 6 is going to be high already and you need to offset with more Omega 3 oils. If grass-fed meats then the Omega 3 to 6 would be more in balance.

They only “splinter” if they are cooked, the discussion here is on raw and the raw do not splinter... big difference. Never give COOKED bones of any kind to your dogs, they all splinter when cooked.
You might want to look at Flint River Ranch dog food. It is a little more expensive that off the shelf stuff but they deliver it to your door with no additional shipping charge. I have 3 very small yorkies and one just would not eat the brands I brought home. It is human grade quality and my guys are thiving on it.
Vets get their training in nutrition from Purina and Hills (Science Diet) and that is why they sell their foods in their offices. Next time the vet tells someone to feed the K/D look at the ingredients? It’s pure crap. It was 15 years ago I had a dog with kidney failure and the vet tried to push k/d that sent me into learning all about animal nutrition... it as a puppy that died the day after her vaccines that made me research those, none of us are too old to learn before it’s too late.
Drumsticks are a little big for a small dog. Better to give wings, just break the wing open — or backs if you are feeding chicken.

I just saw that....... very good. I would still try some wings and necks though. You asked about choking, we only had one dog every choke and it was on a raw hide (we never give those these days) and we used hemostats to pull it out of her throat. We did keep the hemostats back when we were training our dogs on raw though to take them away and give them back so they knew that we were in charge and we could take the food and give the food at will.
