Controversial UIC professor BILL AYERS denied emeritus status
Chicago Tribune ^ | September 24, 2010 | Jodi S. Cohen

he vote, at a U. of I. board meeting in Urbana, was unanimous and came after a passionate speech by board chair Christopher Kennedy, who invoked the 1968 assassination of his father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, in saying that he was voting his conscience.

The other trustees, without comment, also voted against the appointment.

Ayers, the Vietnam War-era radical, had been an education faculty member at UIC since 1987. He retired effective Aug. 31 and then sought the emeritus faculty status, a largely honorific title that includes some benefits such as library privileges.

A co-founder of the Weather Underground anti-war group, Ayers was frequently in the media spotlight and, as such, was one of the university's best-known faculty members.

While trustees regularly vote on emeritus appointments, they rarely comment about them.

But in an emotional statement, Kennedy discussed his reasons for voting against Ayers' request.

"I am guided by my conscience and one which has been formed by a series of experiences, many of which have been shared with the people of our country and mark each of us in a profound way," Kennedy said.

He said he could not confer the title "to a man whose body of work includes a book dedicated in part to the man who murdered my father."

Kennedy was referring to a 1974 book co-authored by Ayers, "Prairie Fire," which was dedicated to a long list of people including Robert Kennedy assassin Sirhan Sirhan and "all political prisoners in the U.S."

For once, I agree withh RFK, jr. Bobby is so right on this one.

And why would Ayers & Co be part of the Fan Club of Sirhan Sirhan? Is Obama a fan as well?

It's usually an honorary title used for retired university faculty members who received the rank of a full “Professor”. This allows a person to still call themselves a professor at a given university although they are retired e.g. “Professor Emeritus Blah Blah Blah”. There are a few perks that come with the title such, such as library access and usually office space.

Dedication of a book to Satan? Sure, no problem, welcome aboard.

Dedication of a different book to Sirhan Sirhan? OMG! Unforgivable!

Whatever.

It's not as though Ayer's bombing of the Pentagon and or his being involved the deaths of two accomplices in a pre-mature bomb detonation or his involvement with the murder of a cop should be sufficient reason to eliminate Ayer's from nomination in the first place.

The only difference between Bill Ayers as a domestic terrorist bomber and Timothy McVeigh as a domestic terrorists bomber is that Bill Ayers was a totally incompetent domestic terrorist bomber. Both deserved the same reward: execution.

Well yes, but amid the hue and cry that Ayers dedicated a book to Sirhan Sirhan (a fire-able or non-hireable offense in my mind, certainly.), and the wailing and gnashing of teeth over that - was lost the rather salient fact that he ALSO dedicated a book to SATAN.

My apologies, that was Saul Alinski, community organizer par excellence and philosophical mentor of Hillary Clinton (she did her thesis on him) and Barack 0bama.

Sorry for the confusion, hard to keep these left wing whack jobs straight.

“Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology, and history... the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom — Lucifer.” Saul Alinski
