The philosophical issue raised here is even more important than the crassly illegal behavior. The left has always contended that rights emanate from the state. You only have the rights that are granted to you by the state. Thus, they do not see a contradiction in an uneven enforcement of a law. It is merely the state exerting its prerogative to administer your "rights" as they see fit.
