The NRSC is going up with an ad in West Virginia on Friday, a sure sign that Republicans believe their chances in the state are on the rise.
The ad, which is backed by a $1.2M buy, hits on the campaign strategy businessman John Raese (R) has already been using: Tie Gov. Joe Manchin (D) to Pres. Obama.
"Joe Manchin supports Barack Obama's big government agenda," the narrator says. "Manchin supported Obama's stimulus plan, which wasted $800B...Big spending, more government, less freedom. We don't want a rubber stamp for Obama, we can't afford Joe Manchin in Washington."
The ad, first reported by The Fix, is a clear indication that Republicans are seeking to expand the Senate playing field into West Virginia, once considered a sure thing for Manchin and the Democrats. The ad is running for 2 weeks on radio and TV, including the expensive DC market, according to party sources.
Hotline On Call reported previously in our Path To Victory series that Republicans increasingly believe this race will tighten as we approach Election Day. They point to Pres. Obama's approval rating in the state, which is one of his lowest in the country. They also note Raese's personal fortune; he's spent $1M or more in his 4 previous statewide runs in West Virginia.

get the popcorn ready.
It is funny to see all of these so called “blue dog democrats” running scared with nowhere to go and nowhere to hide.
The NRSC pouring money into helping a conservative get elected!
Hopefully they'll take all the money they'd set aside for Castle and put it here.
I don't think the "rubber stamp" thing rings completely true, though - needs a little more sophistication. Manchin will likely oppose Obama sometimes (guns, etc) but he'll be on board for the big stuff like health care & spending, big government.
Hot dang!! The NRSC finally did something acceptable rather than deplorable.
I got a problem here. Not once do they mention who to vote for. All I saw was Joe Manchin in big red letters.
Sort of like the ol’ “Who cares about the review as long as they spelled your name right.”.
“I don’t think the “rubber stamp” thing rings completely true, though - needs a little more sophistication.”
—To be fair though, there’s only so much you can say in a 30 second spot, especially without overwhelming people with too many issues at once.
But yeah, as you note, Manchin will be on board with all the awful big stuff that really concerns people, and as for other issues (guns, etc.)- anything Manchin is supposedly for, Raese also supports. And every Dem that has been elected to Congress has sided with the Dems on practically every key issue (except for those rare occasions with Pelosi or Reid gives them the okay to vote otherwise because they have enough votes...)- so, why take a chance?
Plus, it’s Manchin’s responsibility to explain why he keeps saying that he supports all these pieces of Obama’s agenda...

—It’s about time!

Good point. (Especially since a lot of people still don’t know how to pronounce Raese’s name).
I don’t think the “rubber stamp” thing rings completely true————
Manchin is a complete rubber stamp for Obama, right down to the idea that there was now way anyone, ANYONE could even give him a close race.
