Top strategist quits, fears re-election of Deval Patrick
Treasurer Tim Cahills floundering gubernatorial bid suffered another huge blow last night when his top strategist quit, saying the independent candidates slim hopes are only hurting Republican Charlie Bakers chances.
We have to deal with reality as it is and not the way it ought to be, said John Weaver, a national GOP powerbroker who quit Cahills campaign last night. I would prefer Tim Cahill be the next governor. Thats not going to happen.
Weaver, who helped orchestrate U.S. Sen. John McCains 2000 presidential bid, told the Herald the move was not abrupt and had been building for some time.
Its clear to me the choice is between Charlie Baker and Gov. (Deval) Patrick, Weaver told the Herald last night. I dont want to be a party by helping Tim to in effect, help reelect one of the most liberal governors in the country, and thats Gov. Patrick.
He added: I think the world of Tim. I think hed be a great governor. But its clear the voters are deciding between two people.
Cahills campaign spokeswoman, Amy Birmingham, did not return repeated calls last night.
The move comes as Cahills poll numbers have tanked, with some showing him with just five percent of the vote.
Baker spokeswoman Amy Goodrich said: John Weaver is a very talented and smart guy. This is a big loss (for Cahill). But were proud to have his support.
Cahills camp trumpeted the arrival of Weaver and three other former McCain operatives in March, portraying their addition as proof his independent bid had strong GOP support and that he wasnt just a Democrat in disguise.
Weaver announced his decision on Twitter yesterday, saying: Its just not going to happen for Tim and continuing on would only help Patrick and hurt Baker.
The Republican Governors Association, which is backing Baker as part of an initiative to pick up GOP seats nationwide, said the move is another blow to the struggling campaign.
We took Tim Cahills campaign a lot more serious when we saw the team that he had put together, said RGA spokesman Chris Schrimpf. Now its clear that he has lost any credibility that hes running a serious campaign.
Yessir I quit that nasty old Democrat party and am an independent man—but wait, I need to take a Dem ballot in the primary and help some friends. Oh look there’s Deval—howaya pal! Thanks for the compliments you threw my way in that last debate!
Kiss of Death
Uh...yeah.
Where exactly did Cahill’s money come from? He had internet ads all over the web for months.
from the comments:
>>When people no long want to buy what you are selling, a good salesman always leaves. You never want to be the last one in the office turning off the lights.
Weaver is doing the smart thing. Cahill? I do not understand his thinking. If he bows out now he can run for congress or even John Kerry’s seat. But if he stays, he will be despised by all.
What is Tim Cahill thinking?
Sorry, I see no evidence that his campaign is, or has ever been, on the level. You could see it in the debate Monday. The fire from Tim was always directed at Baker. Deval got the softballs from Tim.
>>Sure, blame the people running the campaign for the failure of the candidate. Tim Cahill is totally responsible for the content of his message and he should get out of the race right now. People never bought his act. I applaud Mr. Weaver for having the guts to tell it like it is. It’s the truth and we know it. He gave it his best I’m sure but Cahill will never be a silk purse. As for McCain, nobody could make the guy look good after the two bills he sponsored: McCain/Fiengold (unconstitutional) and McCain/Kennedy (unAmerican). Don’t care who was running that campaign, I couldn’t vote for him or the Marxist.
>>Cahill touted the fact last spring that he had 4 republican strategists on his campaign: Weaver, Yob, Dennehy and Salter to show that he wasn’t a democrat and didn’t look at the party but rather the individual. All have left the campaign since then. Weaver getting the most attention.
(NOTE: Cahill took a Dem ballot in primary to help some friends...)
>>Cahill’s campaign was nothing more than a well played tactic by Fat John Walsh the Mass Democratic Party Chairman. It is now falling apart though, hopefully in time for Cahill to bow out of the campaign. Tim, you will be the most hated man in Massachusetts if Deval gets into office again. He is destroying this state 1 policy at a time. We have the 2nd highest debt in the country next to California and they are writing IOU’s. It is time to remove the cancer from the Governor’s office and if Cahill graciously backs out of the campaign it will ensure Patrick’s defeat.
So this guy hired McCain’s people to help his campaign and he’s surprised that he’s losing? Perhaps Chris Christie’s election advisors are looking for work.
Please help out a Left Coast FReeper: Is this good for conservatism or not?
TAXPAYERS.
Right after he paid tax bills that were unpaid for 8 yrs,
he reached some kind of threshold where he could get $750,000 of money from the state in matching funds for advertising. Who’s paying for that?
Got a mirror?
We Mass. taxpayers are funding the ads.
State known for liberalism has choice between moonbat, moonbat, hack (Cahill), and flawed but conservative Republican. Hack takes votes away from Republican, moonbat gets back in. Well, I hope not.
The likes of Scott Brown succeed in actually winning but piss off conservatives because not all of his votes go our way. He said that would be the case during the campaign. The alternative: with Senator Coakley NONE of the votes would go our way. This is Massachusetts and we sometimes have to take what we can get. Same with Baker.
Can a true conservative win in Massachusetts? Can Bill Clinton go through a day without thinking about sex?
Same with Baker—flawed but all we have. Good news for conservatism? Only when you consider that the alternative could be a lot worse.
btw for those who complain about Romney, say what you will but I believe some of Romney’s people were involved in the ad campaign for Scott Brown’s incredible comeback win. Did you hear Brown’s comments re: Harvard? Would Martha have
said that?
Thanks for the help. I’ll gladly take half a loaf in MA.
Baker is a Romney Liar who raised insurance rates
on his victims.
This is another Romney DIRTY TRICK for RomneyCARE.
Sponsored by Conservatives for Patrick-Cahill 2012.
Cahill is NOT Patrick, and has no control over him.
In fact, liar BAKER should take "credit" for his own failures.
Those failures include: Increasing premiums on the
public for insurance even when the actual costs fell.
Those failures of BAKER include his own raising costs,
and trying to twist the facts against the public.
At the end of the day, Baker's lies and support of RomneyCARE
is not appropriate for Massachusetts or conservatives.
Consider, too, that BAKER avoided a real primary by dirty trick
. This shows what a low life he is.
Want another lie of BAKER? (doubt that)
He claims his polls went up 20% in the last two weeks.
This shows he is incapable of telling the truth or admitting his own failures.
Massachusetts is the Peoples' Commonwealth, not Romney's and not Patrick's.
The carpetbaggers are now seen for what they are.
Cahill loses another. The wheels are coming off.
>>Cahill made his reassurance after campaign manager Adam Meldrum resigned less than 24 hours after senior strategist John Weaver also quit.

Like any of it matters. They’re all a bunch of liberal hacks.
