Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) is vowing to block a Senate vote to confirm President Obamas choice to head the White House Office of Management and Budget unless a temporary ban on offshore oil-and-gas drilling is removed.
Her pledge to hold up the nomination of Jack Lew represents a dramatic political escalation of Landrieus fight against the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling and the slowdown in permits for shallow water projects.
Due to the Administrations unwillingness to reverse or modify its policies that have halted all deepwater and nearly all shallow-water energy exploration, I cannot in good conscience allow this nomination to proceed until I receive a commitment from Mr. Lew, the President, or another senior economic advisor to reverse these policies, which have been so detrimental to working families across the Gulf Coast, Landrieu wrote in a letter Thursday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).
I simply cannot believe that the good folks from LA would forget what she did.
Corrupt but principled. What I mean by this is that it is usually (not now) wrong to hold up government acts by requiring a quid pro quo; on the other hand, she should do what’s necessary for her state when it is being Federally abused.
Will you block until the ban is LIFTED?
Or only "until I receive a commitment from Mr. Lew, the President, or another senior economic advisor to reverse these policies..."
And we all know what "commitments" are worth to libs.
She’s got nothing to loose and everything to gain.
She is a worthless turkey, but I think her constituents have pushed her back against the wall on this one.
Obama is NOT popular in Louisiana, I would suspect, although I suppose he gets the black vote no matter what.
Vitter should join her. She still is toast next year.
That’s called ‘throwing your weight around’.
Poor Mary doesn’t like the flavor of kool aide Obama is pushing BOO..HOOO...HOOOO Wait till she gets a taste of TEA!
She still is toast next year.
In what regards?
Her current term expires in Jan. 2015.
It’d be good to see bipartisan support on this effort. The ban hurts everybody...I can’t even understand what Omama thinks he’s getting out of it. What? A few Sierra Club votes? He had those. The ban was stupid.
Hate to agree with her for anything...but bully for her, standing up for something right for once.
Mary long ago established that she has a price tag on everything. Being queen of broke isn’t on her list of good ideas. If drillers don’t drill it’s like Johns with empty pockets, ya’ know.
She'll be bought off.
Agree on all points.
Zer0’s drilling ban is crazy and sadly much damage has already been done with rigs being pulled out and companies afraid to drill even if allowed. They don’t know what to expect from him a week or month down the road.
“She’ll be bought off.”
Big time. She won her seat with a little help from her acorn friends. First off, the Landrieu family is a big time policical family in LA. Her daddy was mayor of NOLA. When she ran for the senate she won ONE parrish out of 54. Her opponant, Woody Jenkins won 53 parrishes, but Mary won the numbers game. She took Orleans parrish. And get this, on the news the night of her victory, the media interviewed a homeless guy who was upset. He had been promised $50.00 for every time he voted for Landrieu. He had been taken to about 12 different polling places and voted for her. At the end of the day he got paid only 50 bucks. He was really mad. The media ran that story on the 10PM news out in the open. Woody Jenkins filed a complaint with the FEC. He was told that his case would be reviewed in 8 years due to the backlog. The senate term is 6 years. Since then, she has been an incumbant and Jenkins couldn’t afford to keep a lawyer on retainer for 8 stinking years just to get his case heard.
Mary is tied to acorn and obama.
She’s for sale. Only the price is to be determined.
Damage control mode.
Too late.
I take it she is up for reelection?
Yes, no?
