Whitman comments that Fresno 'looks like Detroit' (Meg Whitman - CA)

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman on Tuesday told the San Jose Mercury News editorial board that "Fresno looks like Detroit. It's awful."

According to the Mercury News website, Whitman was commenting on Fresno's economic state and the effect of recession on the region, and the former eBay CEO's campaign said as much in a statement released this morning.

"It was clear in the interview that Meg was talking about the economic duress in Fresno and the awful pain that results from record high unemployment," Whitman spokesman Andrea Jones Rivera said in an e-mail. "Meg knows that Fresno cannot be left behind as it has been in the past when the economic situation around the state gets better but Fresno doesn't respond as quickly."

But Tom Holyoke, a political science professor at California State University, Fresno, said Whitman should know better...

FR HQ is on lock-down in expectation of a hugh (sp) crime wave!!! A much better comparison would be Oakland (Jerry Brown, Mayor) and Detroit.

"Off-the-Cuff" "Foot-in-Mouth" disease comment by Meg.

I’m sick of politicians not being honest because of PC. If Fresno is like Detroit than say it like it is.

Seems to me that the “unemployed” may be largely illegal aliens. Send them packing and then look at the situation again.

Except that comparing Fresno to Detroit is like comparing Billings to Detroit...a very conservative agricultural area with one of the lowest metro crime rates in California. Sure we have high unemployment, but that is mostly due to farm/ag labor.

I’ve spent some time in Fresno. Seemed like every time I turned a corner there was a police cruiser.

"Foot-in-Mouth" disease

The "cringe factor" every time she opens her mouth is off the scales.

Mayor Patterson (was mayor just befora Bubba) beefed up the P.D. in the late '90's after years of neglect...so yes, many more cruisers and less crime!

As if being the two-faced unprincipled phony that she is isn’t enough... This is out of the Richard Riordan playbook for stupid gaffes.

She somehow thinks she is making gains with Latinos and Obama voters, though.

I haven’t been to Detroit, but I was in Fresno the first weekend in August and depressed yes, but Detroit.. hardly.. at least what I saw and we spent the night there. What is sad though is to see the Central Valley looking like a dust bowl thanks to a 2” smelt that isn’t even native to California, but another import like the Asian Carp.

Geez, to think I commute by bike to work every day on the mean streets of Fresno, little did I know I was putting myself at such risk!

I have lived in Detroit, I know Detroit, Fresno is no Detroit.

Detroit is a product of forty years of Democrat control and hasn't had a Republican mayor since the 60’s.
Fresno has a Republican mayor.

In Detroit you would become immediate prey walking in most areas within the eight mile perimeter. Fresno has some dangerous areas but not the entire city.

Fresno is in the center of the bread basket that feeds the US and the world. Detroit is in the center of Hell.

Fresno is warm and sunny with mild winters. Detroit has cold winters with a lot of snow that the city is incapable of removing.

On the other hand, the suburbs around Detroit are great(Troy,Birmingham,Royal Oak,and Grosse Pointe). The education level and skilled work force associated with the auto industry is tremendous. They have plenty of water and cheap energy for heavy industry. Fresno will never have a skilled work force to support machine or heavy industry. We struggle to get enough water for Agriculture and we pay .44 a kilowatt/ Hr for electricity.

Here! Here!! Without the Fresno area, no raisins for your raisin bran!!(Among many other crops). ;-) Now about “Pacific Graft & Extortion”, it hasn’t been the same since the AB 1890-forced bankruptcy.

------------------------

I think you're spot on.

The colonization of America by a foreign country proceeds quietly, pervasively, methodically and perversely. You think they only come here in the millions to find work? You are blind. They come to take back what they think is theirs. California is already theirs. We're just too stupid to know it.

They are not immigrants!!!

They are illegal invaders.

Illegals waving their Mexican flags in our face are just unarmed invaders counting on demographics to win in the next 20 years.

Immigrants move to a country to permanently take up residence. An Immigrant comes to America to become an AMERICAN, not to make tax-free cash under the table and send it back to his 'home' country.

They aren't here to assimilate or even learn the language. They are here for the money and if they can't find work then to hell with the USA. No loyalty, just want to use us.

The low estimate is 12 million illegals. More likely, there's close to 30 million of them. If we don't do something soon, it'll be 50 million.

The illegal aliens who get amnesty, having come from a socialist society, will vote for whoever promises the most welfare, government health care, food stamps, government housing, etc. Also factor in the chain migration that will follow, and you can kiss America goodbye.

We won't talk logically about the invasion, border control or national sovereignty. The people themselves are resentful of the fact that we Americans have been able to make something of true greatness in such a short period of time. While they have a much longer history, that includes dismal failure after humiliating dismal failure.

Do the Mexicans intend to reclaim the land they accuse the US of having stolen? To what end? To convert it back to squalor?

The right they are really advocating for is the unlimited movement of Mexicans into the US for the eventual purpose of dispossessing Americans of their rights and of their property.

If Congress grants amnesty to millions of invaders and they vote, we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

Hasta la vista, baby.

Yet just today, a poll showing the majority of Californians by some margin, support obama and his agenda.
