Our problem is we don’t have a vision of a world that is free and governed by the principles of the US Constitution. I always believed that, after the cold war, we should create a foreign policy that had that as its goal. We were moving in that direction, but Clinton screwed it up, and Bush II didn’t articulate anything coherent.
I have been looking for the speech for years and finally found it, it was Reagan’s last major speech at the Oxford Union in 1992, I think of this speech as his parting words and a blueprint for the post-Cold War world, and although you could see some signs of what was to come, he was still as brilliant as ever. And obviously few have heeded his words- more’s the pity. I must admit watching this speech, my eyes welled up a few times, as I realized how much I miss this man.
