There's something really strange about a community that has lived for four hundred years in the rural South, speaks Southern-accented English, and (for the most part) practices Southern-style Fundamentalist Protestantism being considered more "other" (and therefore more protected) than immigrants from Communist China.

For liberals, American Blacks seem to be the Ultimate Other. Being Black trumps being foreign-born, being from an alien culture, being Communist--maybe even being from another planet.

Meanwhile, conservatives (who are supposedly predisposed to defend what is familiar) would take the side of three headed arthropods from another dimension if they had friction with the Black community.

This whole situation is weird.
